I’m kind of freaking out because I need both a crown and a root canal on a molar, and I’ve heard mixed things about which part is actually worse. Some people say the root canal is the big scary thing, but others complain more about the crown part after. Like, is one of them more painful? Or does one take longer to feel “normal” again?
I’m mostly worried about pain and not being able to chew properly for a while (I love food way too much). If anyone’s been through both, did you have more trouble with one versus the other? And how long did it take before you could eat like usual? Would appreciate any tips or just stories about what it was like for you.
Honestly, I think the root canal gets a way worse rep than it deserves. Like, yeah, the idea of it freaked me out too, but when I actually had one done, it was more boring than painful. The numbing stuff worked really well and the only weird part was holding my mouth open for so long. Afterward, I was a little sore, but nothing some ibuprofen couldn’t handle.
But I’ll push back a bit on the idea that the crown is always easier. For me, the temporary crown was actually more annoying. It felt kind of bulky and I was paranoid about chewing on that side in case it popped off (never did, but still). Once the permanent crown was on, everything felt normal again pretty quick—maybe a couple days tops.

Same here, and honestly, I was back to eating most stuff within a week. Just took it slow at first. Everyone’s different, but for me, the recovery wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d built it up in my head.

Funny, my kid actually had an easier time with the crown than the root canal. The crown felt weird for a bit, but the root canal recovery dragged on—lots of soreness and crankiness. Maybe it’s just different for everyone?
