Ever heard of onlays instead of crowns after a root canal?

The onlay felt odd at first, kind of like having a Lego brick stuck to your molar, but it settled in after a week or so.

I can totally relate to that weird feeling. I had an onlay put in after my root canal last year and honestly, it took me way longer than a week to stop noticing it. Every time I bit down, I’d get this little jolt of “that’s not my tooth,” which just made my anxiety spike even more. Eventually it just blended in, but those first few days were rough.

About the sensitivity—mine was definitely tingly with cold stuff for maybe two weeks? Hot drinks didn’t bother me as much, but ice cream was a no-go for a while. My dentist said it was normal and would fade as things settled, but I was still low-key worried something wasn’t sealed right. It did get better though.

Did your dentist mention if onlays are more likely to cause sensitivity than crowns? Mine brushed it off like it was no big deal, but I’m always second-guessing if I should have pushed for more info. The whole “enough tooth left” thing stressed me out too... makes you wonder what happens if you chip it later.

That Lego brick feeling is real, haha. I kept poking at mine with my tongue for like a month, convinced something was off. The sensitivity freaked me out too—ice water was evil. Glad to hear it faded for you. You’re definitely not alone!

That weird “foreign object” sensation stuck with me for weeks too. I kept checking with my tongue, half-convinced something was loose, but it was just my nerves adjusting. Sensitivity to cold was brutal at first, but it really does get better. It’s wild how much our brains fixate on even tiny changes in the mouth.
