Weird things you remember from being knocked out at the dentist

Here’s a fun bit of trivia I learned after my wisdom teeth removal: apparently, some people wake up from anesthesia with no memory of the procedure but can still carry on conversations or even follow instructions during surgery. It’s called “conscious sedation,” but honestly, it felt more like being in a really weird dream that you sort of remember… or maybe just think you do? Like, I asked my surgeon if I said anything embarrassing while I was out and he just laughed (not very reassuring).

Another thing—did you know your body can still react to pain or discomfort under anesthesia? My friend told me her leg kicked out during her root canal, and she had zero recollection. Makes you wonder how much your body is doing without you knowing.

I’m curious if anyone else has little flashes of memory from oral surgery, or if it’s all just a blank slate. Also, has anyone ever had those wild stories about waking up mid-procedure (hopefully not too scary)? Would love to hear if there are any other strange facts or personal stories about getting numbed up for dental work.

That’s actually pretty common, but I’d say it’s not always about pain—sometimes your muscles just twitch from the meds themselves. I’ve seen people move a bit during sedation, but usually nothing dramatic or dangerous. The team is always watching for those signs.

- I remember getting my wisdom teeth out and thinking I was awake the whole time, but apparently I kept repeating the same question every five minutes. Zero memory of that.
- Conscious sedation is weirdly in-between—some folks get flashes of memory, others just go blank. I wouldn’t worry too much about saying something embarrassing; the staff has heard it all.
- Waking up mid-procedure is super rare with modern meds. If it happens, most people are so out of it they don’t really process what’s going on.

I actually find the “dream” feeling kind of comforting—like your brain knows you’re safe and checks out for a bit. But yeah, bodies do their own thing sometimes... just part of the experience.
