How did you get your kid to ditch the binky?

Just curious—when it came time to say goodbye to the pacifier, did you go cold turkey, do the “binky fairy” thing, or just wait it out? We tried swapping it for a stuffed animal, but honestly, that was a fail. Which method worked (or didn’t) for you?

- Tried cold turkey first. Complete disaster—nobody slept for like three days.
- Ended up just waiting it out. Took a few months but he lost interest on his own.
- Binky fairy sounded cute but my kid wasn’t buying it.
- Honestly, every kid’s different. Don’t stress if the stuffed animal thing flopped. You’ll get there.

We tried the binky fairy too—my daughter just gave me this look like, “Really, Mom?” and wanted to negotiate for two fairies and a unicorn. In the end, gradual reduction worked best for us. I started limiting pacifier use to naps and bedtime, then just bedtime, then... gone. Took about three weeks and a few rough nights. Not gonna lie, I questioned my sanity a couple times. But honestly, you’re right—each kid’s timeline is unique. No single method is magic.

That’s hilarious—my kid also tried to bargain for extra “magic” in exchange for her pacifiers. Honestly, I was so anxious about the whole process, but slow and steady felt less traumatic for both of us. Still lost sleep over it, though.

That bargaining thing cracks me up—my son tried to negotiate for two extra bedtime stories per binky. We ended up doing a slow phase-out, just like you mentioned. First, we limited it to naps and bedtime, then just bedtime, then none. It took a couple weeks and some rough nights, but I think the gradual approach made it less dramatic. I was worried about his teeth (orthodontist here flagged it early), so I felt a bit of pressure to get it done. Looking back, it was stressful but not as bad as I feared.
