Struggling With Thumb Sucking: How Did You Or Your Kids Stop?

My 6-year-old still sucks his thumb, especially when he’s tired or upset. We’ve tried the bitter nail polish and even the reward charts, but nothing’s really stuck (pun not intended). I’m kind of worried about his teeth shifting, and the dentist keeps bringing it up. Did anyone here actually break the habit? What worked for you (or your kid), and how long did it take?

We’ve tried the bitter nail polish and even the reward charts, but nothing’s really stuck (pun not intended).

Been there with my nephew—nothing worked until he got a special “thumb buddy” sleeve from a family friend. Took a couple months, but it slowly did the trick. Staying patient and positive really helped. Teeth shifted back after he stopped, so there’s hope.

That’s encouraging to hear. Did your nephew have trouble keeping the sleeve on at night? My daughter always manages to wiggle out of anything we try after bedtime, so I wonder if the “thumb buddy” was comfy enough for sleep. Curious if you had to use any backup strategies during tough days or setbacks.

- We tried the thumb buddy with my son last year—honestly, he hated it at first. He’d yank it off as soon as he thought we weren’t looking, especially at bedtime.
- For sleep, we switched to a soft mitten (just a regular baby mitten, nothing fancy). That actually worked better for us since it was harder for him to pull off without waking up.
- On rough nights or during setbacks, we did a sticker chart. Not gonna lie, some days he just didn’t care about the reward, but over time it helped him see progress.
- One thing I noticed: if he was tired or stressed, thumb-sucking got way worse. We started focusing more on his bedtime routine—extra stories, dim lights, that kind of thing—to help him wind down.
- The sleeve was hit or miss here. I think comfort is super individual. Some kids seem fine with it, others just can’t stand having something on their hand all night.
- If you haven’t already, maybe try different fabrics or even a sock? We had to experiment a bit before finding what worked (and what he couldn’t Houdini his way out of).
