Trouble after wisdom teeth removal vs regular tooth extraction—what’s worse?

Did anyone else notice age making a difference in recovery?

Honestly, I’m not sure age was the main thing for me. When I had a regular molar pulled last year (I’m 30), it hurt way more than my impacted wisdom tooth removal at 26. But the difference was mostly in the cost and aftercare—insurance barely covered the regular extraction, and I had to be way more careful with what I ate. Maybe it’s less about age and more about which tooth, or how complicated the extraction is?

I’m actually curious—did anyone else have way more swelling with a regular extraction? My wisdom teeth were a nightmare, but the swelling after my last molar came out made me look like a chipmunk for days. Is that just luck of the draw, or does tooth location really matter?

Tooth location can definitely play a role, but honestly, everyone reacts a bit differently. I’ve seen folks breeze through wisdom teeth removal, then swell up like crazy after a regular molar. Sometimes it’s just how the roots are shaped or how much tissue gets moved around. I remember one patient who had barely any swelling after all four wisdoms, but their premolar extraction left them icing their cheek for days. It’s not always predictable, and yeah, it can feel pretty unfair.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about it being unpredictable. My wisdom teeth came out with barely any fuss—just a little sore, nothing major. But when I had to get a regular molar pulled for my braces, my whole face puffed up and I could barely eat for days. Honestly, I was way more anxious about the wisdom teeth, but the “easier” one ended up being so much worse for me. Guess there’s just no way to know how your body’s gonna react... which is kind of nerve-wracking.

Totally hear you on that unpredictability. It’s wild how what seems like a “simple” extraction can end up being way rougher. I’ve seen people breeze through wisdom teeth and then get wrecked by a regular tooth pull. Swelling, pain, even bruising can just hit out of nowhere. Sometimes it depends on the tooth’s roots or if it’s infected, but honestly, everyone’s body just reacts differently. The anxiety beforehand is the worst part for me, because you just don’t know how it’ll go.
