Trouble after wisdom teeth removal vs regular tooth extraction - what’s worse?
I’ve seen a lot of people say the second round is worse, and honestly, I wonder if it’s less about the number of teeth and more about how impacted they are or how tricky the extraction gets. Sometimes the lower wisdom teeth are buried deeper in the bone, which means the oral surgeon has to remove some bone to get them out. That can definitely make swelling and pain way worse. Did you notice if your second surgery was on lower teeth, or did they have to cut more? I’ve had patients come in after a “simple” extraction with barely any complaints, but others with a full-blown chipmunk face for days.
It’s interesting you mentioned stitches. Not everyone gets them, but when there’s bone removal or a bigger incision, stitches are pretty much guaranteed. They can help with healing, but sometimes they also make your mouth feel tighter and more sore - especially if they’re not dissolvable and you have to go back in to get them out later.
I’d actually challenge the idea that regular extractions are always easier. If you’ve ever had a molar removed that had roots wrapped around the jawbone or was infected, those recoveries can be brutal too. Wisdom teeth just get all the attention because they’re notorious for being awkwardly positioned. But honestly, I’ve seen some “regular” tooth removals that looked way rougher than a straightforward wisdom tooth pop-out.
Out of curiosity - did your dentist mention anything about dry socket? Some folks are more prone to it after wisdom teeth removal, especially if there’s lots of bone exposed. That alone can make recovery feel ten times worse than a typical extraction.
I think there’s just so much variation depending on how complicated things get under the gumline. It’s not always about how many teeth come out at once... sometimes it’s just bad luck with anatomy or healing.
That’s such a good point about regular extractions sometimes being just as bad, or even worse than wisdom teeth. I had a molar pulled last year (not a wisdom tooth), and honestly, the recovery was way rougher than I expected. The roots were apparently all twisted, and the dentist had to really work to get it out. I ended up with stitches and a ton of swelling. I actually thought something was wrong because my face puffed up so much, but they said it was just a tricky extraction.
I’ve always been super anxious about dry socket too. My oral surgeon mentioned it after my wisdom teeth came out and basically scared me into barely moving my mouth for a week. I followed all the instructions - no straws, soft food, rinsing gently - but I still found myself panicking over every weird taste or ache. It’s wild how much that one complication gets talked about compared to other stuff like infection or nerve pain.
What you said about bone removal makes sense. My lower wisdom teeth were impacted and they had to cut them out in pieces, plus there was bone involved. I definitely needed stitches for that one, and the tight feeling was so uncomfortable for days. The upper ones came out way easier and barely hurt at all. It’s weird how different the experience can be depending on which tooth and how it’s sitting in your mouth.
Has anyone else noticed that recovery seems to drag on way longer if you’re anxious? I swear my pain felt worse just because I kept worrying about every little thing. Wondering if that’s just me or if anxiety actually makes healing feel slower...
I can totally relate to what you’re saying about anxiety making recovery feel worse. When I had a premolar extracted a couple years ago (not a wisdom tooth), I was honestly more nervous than I’d been for my wisdom teeth. The whole thing took longer than expected because the roots were hooked, and I ended up with a bunch of stitches and a sore jaw. I remember lying there afterwards, hyper-aware of every twinge and weird taste, convinced I was about to get dry socket or something worse. The swelling was no joke either - my cheek looked like I’d lost a boxing match.
It’s funny, because for my wisdom teeth, the top ones came out so easily I barely needed painkillers. The bottom ones were impacted, though, and they had to cut away some bone. That tight, pulling sensation from the stitches stuck around for days, just like you described. But even with all that, I think my anxiety was way higher with the regular extraction. Maybe it’s because it was unexpected, or maybe because the dentist kept saying how “tricky” it was going to be... Not exactly reassuring.
I’ve read that stress and anxiety can actually make pain feel more intense and drag out healing, and honestly, that matches my experience. The more I worried, the more every ache seemed magnified. I’d catch myself googling every symptom, which definitely didn’t help. Once I finally relaxed and trusted the healing process, things started to improve faster.
It’s wild how different each extraction can be depending on the tooth and situation. Wisdom teeth get all the attention, but sometimes those “regular” teeth are way more stubborn. And yeah, dry socket gets hyped up so much that it’s hard not to obsess over it, even though infection or nerve pain are also real risks. I guess the unpredictability is what makes these experiences so nerve-wracking.
