Which is easier: healing from a simple extraction or a surgical one?

Simple one just felt like a weird pressure and I was back to normal food pretty fast. Anticipation definitely made both seem scarier than they were.

That “gross taste from the stitches” really brought me back… I remember thinking nothing could taste worse than that weird mix of blood and whatever those stitches were made of. For me, surgical extraction was definitely rougher too. The swelling lasted days, and I had a hard time sleeping on that side. With the simple one, it was more like you said—a bit of pressure, then I was eating soft foods by dinner.

I do think anticipation makes it all seem worse. My mind ran wild before both procedures, but in reality, the pain was manageable with the meds they gave me. Funny thing—my neighbor bounced back from her surgical extraction way faster than I did, so maybe it just depends on luck or how your body handles it.

If anyone’s nervous about an upcoming extraction, I’d say stock up on ice packs and soups, and try not to stress too much. Most of the time, it’s not as bad as our brains make it out to be.

That weird taste from the stitches is something most people don’t expect, but it’s totally normal. You’re right—healing really does depend on the person and the type of extraction. In general, simple extractions are easier to recover from since there’s less trauma to the tissue. Surgical ones can mean more swelling and tenderness, but with good pain control and some patience, most folks do just fine. Ice packs and soft foods are great tips. If the swelling or pain ever gets worse after a few days, though, it’s worth checking in with your dentist just in case.

Yeah, I’ve had both types and simple extractions were way easier on my wallet and my recovery. The surgical one left me pretty sore for a few days, and the swelling was no joke. I agree about the weird taste from stitches—totally threw me off. Honestly, sticking to soft foods and using ice packs helped a ton. If you’re watching costs, simple is definitely less expensive too. Just gotta take it slow and not rush the healing.

Totally agree about the swelling after a surgical extraction—it looked so much worse than I expected, and my kid was miserable for days. I was honestly surprised how much easier the simple one went for her. Still, I worried constantly about dry socket either way... probably overdid it with the soft foods and constant reminders not to use a straw, but better safe than sorry, right?

I get where you’re coming from—my wallet definitely noticed the difference between the two types too. When I had a surgical extraction, the swelling and meds were a whole ordeal, plus more follow-up visits (which add up). Simple extraction was way less drama for me, both pain-wise and cost-wise. I honestly think the extra precautions with food and straws are worth it though, even if it feels a bit much. Dry socket sounds like a nightmare, and who wants to risk another trip (and bill) to the dentist?
