Which is easier: healing from a simple extraction or a surgical one?

- Totally agree about location making a difference.
- My lower molar extraction (supposed to be “simple”) was way worse than I expected—swelled up like a chipmunk, needed painkillers for days.
- Upper teeth seem to heal faster for some folks, maybe because the bone’s softer?
- I guess “simple” is more about how it looks on x-rays than how it feels after... definitely not always less hassle.

That’s so true—

“simple” is more about how it looks on x-rays than how it feels after... definitely not always less hassle.
I’ve seen so many people surprised by how rough a “simple” extraction can actually feel, especially with lower molars. It’s frustrating when recovery doesn’t match expectations, but your experience is more common than folks realize. Hang in there, things usually start feeling better after the first week or so.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve had both types, and honestly, my “simple” lower molar was way tougher than the surgical one. The dentist said it would be a breeze, but I was sore for days and eating was a pain. With the surgical extraction, at least I got better pain meds and clearer instructions. Sometimes the word “simple” just sets us up for disappointment. The first week really is the hardest—hang in there, it does get easier.

That nails it. I had a so-called “simple” extraction a few years back, and it honestly felt like anything but. The tooth came out in one piece, but the soreness lingered and eating was awkward for way longer than I expected. Meanwhile, when I had a surgical extraction, the process sounded scarier, but I got way more detailed aftercare instructions and meds that actually helped. I think the term “simple” can be misleading—what looks easy on paper doesn’t always match up with how your body reacts.

You’re right, the first week is rough, no matter which type it is. But it does get better. Once I got through those first few days, things improved a lot faster than I thought they would. Hang in there—it’s a hassle now, but you’ll be back to normal before you know it.

Totally agree with this. My “simple” extraction last year turned into a week of mashed potatoes and grumpy chewing. I actually healed faster from my impacted wisdom tooth surgery, weirdly enough. Maybe it’s because they gave me a better painkiller that time? Or maybe it’s just luck of the draw. Did anyone else find the aftercare for surgical stuff way more detailed?
