I totally get the appeal of water flossers, but honestly, I never felt like they did the trick for me. I ended up with stuff wedged in there no matter how many angles I tried. Thread floss is a pain, sure, but it’s the only thing that ever made my teeth actually feel clean. Maybe it’s just a “what you’re used to” thing... but for me, nothing beats the old-school way—even if it takes forever and makes me grumble every night.

I get what you mean about thread floss feeling more thorough—there’s something satisfying about knowing you’ve physically scraped away all the gunk. But I actually had the opposite experience with braces. Thread floss was such a hassle with all the wires, and I kept poking my gums. Ended up switching to a water flosser and, weirdly, it started working better after a couple weeks. Maybe it’s just a learning curve thing? I still keep regular floss around for stubborn spots, though... some nights you just need both.

Threading floss around braces wires is basically an Olympic sport—seriously, whoever designed those little floss threaders must have had a lot of patience. I hear you about the poking and fumbling; I’ve seen people practically invent new curse words trying to get that floss under the wires. Water flossers can be a total game-changer, especially for folks with braces. It’s definitely a learning curve, though—first week, it’s like trying to control a tiny firehose and you end up spraying the bathroom mirror... or your cat if you’re really unlucky.

But once you get the hang of angling it right, it does a solid job blasting out all the stuff stuck in brackets and between teeth. It doesn’t scrape like regular floss, but it’s great for flushing out the gunk. Honestly, the combo approach you’re using is spot on. Some nights you just want to get in there quick and water floss, but for those stubborn bits of spinach or whatever that get wedged in tight, nothing beats actual thread.

Ever tried those little interdental brushes? Some people swear by them for getting around brackets. Curious if anyone else here likes them or if they just end up collecting dust in the bathroom drawer...

That’s such a relatable description of the flossing struggle—I’m honestly convinced the person who invented floss threaders must’ve had braces themselves. I’m right there with you on water flossers. The first couple tries, I managed to spray half my bathroom and had to wipe down the mirror every night, but once you get the angle, it really does help. I don’t think it replaces regular floss for me, though—sometimes I just want that “squeaky clean” feeling between my teeth, especially if something’s really wedged in.

Interdental brushes are interesting. I picked up a pack after my orthodontist mentioned them, but I’ll admit, I don’t reach for them that often. They’re great for certain spots, but sometimes they feel a bit fiddly, and I end up poking my gums if I’m not careful. Still, it’s good to have options—some nights I just don’t have the patience for threading floss, so anything that makes the process easier is a win in my book.

You’re definitely not alone in feeling awkward about all this. It gets easier, and honestly, your approach sounds like you’re doing all the right things.

Floss threaders are basically the unsung heroes of my bathroom drawer. I swear, the first few weeks with braces, I spent more time untangling floss than actually cleaning my teeth. Water flossers sounded like a mess waiting to happen, and—yep—first time I tried, I managed to soak my shirt and even hit the cat. Once you get the hang of it, though, it’s way less hassle for those nights when I just can’t deal with threading every wire.

But I’m with you—sometimes nothing beats regular floss. There’s just something satisfying about feeling like you’ve actually gotten every last bit out. Interdental brushes are hit or miss for me. Some days they’re a lifesaver, other times I feel like I’m fencing with my own mouth. My orthodontist swears by them, so I keep a few around, but I don’t reach for them as much as I probably should.

Honestly, the whole thing gets less awkward over time. I still have my clumsy days, but at least now I don’t dread the nightly routine quite as much.
