Chewing Gum That Actually Works For Gross Breath?
I totally relate to this - sometimes I feel like I’m just chewing gum out of habit, not because it actually does anything for my breath. Especially after coffee or garlic, like you said. It’s almost like the minty flavor just mixes with the bad breath and makes it weirder? I’ve tried those “super strong” gums too, but half the time they just make my mouth feel dry and weirdly numb. Not a fan.
I was curious about the charcoal and zinc ones too, mostly because the packaging looks so... scientific? But honestly, I didn’t notice much difference. The charcoal one tasted kind of chalky and left this odd aftertaste. Maybe it does something, but I couldn’t tell. The zinc ones are supposed to neutralize odors instead of just covering them up, but again, I feel like it’s more hype than actual results.
One thing that helped me a bit was drinking water right after eating something strong and then chewing gum - seems to help more than just gum alone. My dentist mentioned that sometimes tongue scraping actually does more for bad breath than any gum, which surprised me. I got one of those cheap plastic scrapers and it’s kind of gross but oddly satisfying? Feels like it makes a bigger difference than just masking it with mint.
Honestly, I still keep gum around just because it’s convenient and makes me less anxious about my breath in public, even if it’s not a miracle fix. But yeah, if someone actually finds a gum that kills garlic breath for real, I’m all ears... Until then, I guess I’ll stick with water, tongue scraping, and crossing my fingers nobody notices.
I’ve wondered about those zinc gums too - seems like there’s a lot of marketing, but not much real change. I’ve had better luck with tongue scraping as well, though it’s definitely not the most glamorous routine. Has anyone ever tried those little mouth sprays? I’m skeptical they do more than gum, but curious if I’m missing out on something that actually works for post-garlic breath.
I totally get what you mean about the zinc gums - I've tried a couple and honestly didn't notice much difference except for a weird aftertaste. Tongue scraping feels awkward but I do think it helps, even if it's not exactly fun. Those mouth sprays always tempt me, especially before social stuff, but I can't shake the feeling they're just masking things for like five minutes. Garlic breath is my nemesis too... Sometimes I just chew on parsley if it's around, but that's not always practical. If you find something that actually works long-term, I'd love to hear about it!
Zinc gums never did much for me either - just left my mouth feeling a bit chalky, honestly. I remember back in the day, my dentist suggested chewing sugar-free gum mostly for dry mouth, not so much for breath. The only thing that’s stuck with me is keeping hydrated and brushing my tongue (awkward as it is). I’ve tried those sprays before heading into bridge club, but you’re right, they’re like a quick cover-up at best. Ever notice if certain foods just make things worse no matter what? For me, onions linger longer than garlic sometimes...

Totally get what you mean - onions are brutal. I swear, I could brush and rinse twice and still catch a whiff hours later. Brushing your tongue is awkward, but honestly, it’s a game changer for me too. Have you ever tried using a tongue scraper instead? It feels weird at first but seems to help more than just brushing sometimes. Hydration definitely makes a difference for me, especially after coffee or spicy food. Do you notice any difference between mints and gum for stubborn breath? I feel like some gums just mask it while others actually help, but it’s so hit or miss.
