Weirdest pain after getting braces tightened - normal or not?

That dull, radiating headache after a braces adjustment is basically the norm in our house, too. My kid always gets them - sometimes it’s just a mild ache, but a few times it’s been enough to make her want to skip homework. I used to think she was exaggerating, but after talking to the orthodontist and reading some of these threads, it’s clear it’s a pretty standard reaction.

I will say, though, I don’t love when the pain drags on for more than two days. Once, she had this weird sharp pain that wouldn’t quit, and it turned out a wire was poking her cheek. I’d argue that if you’re seeing anything beyond the usual soreness - like sharp or shooting pain or if you can’t eat - it’s worth being pushy about getting it checked sooner rather than later. But for the run-of-the-mill headaches and jaw tension? Totally par for the course, unfortunately.

Ice packs and Tylenol have been our go-to. Hang in there - it does get easier as your mouth adjusts.

I get what you’re saying, but I’m not sure I’d call those headaches “par for the course” for everyone. When my grandkids got their braces, one of them barely felt a thing after adjustments, while the other was miserable for days - headaches, jaw aches, you name it. It turns out she was clenching her teeth in her sleep from the discomfort, which made everything worse.

What helped her wasn’t just Tylenol and ice packs (though those definitely took the edge off). The orthodontist suggested a warm washcloth on her jaw before bed and some gentle jaw stretches in the morning. That made a surprising difference. I know everyone’s different, but if those headaches keep coming back or feel worse than usual, it might be worth mentioning to the orthodontist just in case there’s something else going on. Sometimes it’s not just “normal” soreness - it could be how your kid’s body is reacting to all that shifting.

Hang in there. It really does get better over time, but you’re right to be cautious when pain feels out of the ordinary.

That’s actually super helpful to hear, because I’ve been kind of freaking out over my own weird jaw pain since my first adjustment. I kept thinking headaches and jaw aches were just something you had to tough out, but reading your story makes me realize it’s not always “normal” for everyone. I’ll try the warm washcloth thing tonight…honestly, anything that might help is worth a shot. If it keeps up, I guess I shouldn’t feel bad about checking in with my ortho. This stuff is way more stressful than I expected.

Totally relate to this. I’ve been in the same boat since my first adjustment - thought it was just “part of the process” and maybe I was overreacting. The jaw pain threw me off way more than just the sore teeth, honestly. I kept googling stuff late at night, which probably made it worse because...you know how that goes.

Tried the warm washcloth trick after reading about it here, and it actually helped a little. Didn’t totally fix things, but at least it felt soothing for a bit. I also started doing some gentle jaw stretches (my ortho suggested a few), which seemed to take the edge off when it got really tight. Not sure if that works for everyone, but maybe worth a shot?

The stress part is so real. I was surprised by how much it messed with my sleep and mood at first. It’s weird how something like braces can just sneak up on you like that - physically and mentally. If the pain gets sharp or doesn’t ease up after a couple days, I’d say definitely check in with your ortho. Mine said they’d rather hear from me than have me tough it out and risk something getting worse.

Honestly, you’re not alone in feeling anxious about all this. It’s easy to feel like you should just deal with whatever comes with braces, but everyone’s different - and there’s no medal for suffering through stuff that might be fixable. Hope tonight’s better for you!

I get the urge to just push through, but honestly, I think there’s a bit of a misconception here. Not every ache or pain with braces is “just part of the process.” Sure, some soreness is normal after adjustments, but jaw pain that lingers or affects your sleep isn’t something to ignore or just “tough out.” Sometimes it’s a sign your bite is off, or the pressure’s being distributed unevenly - stuff an ortho really needs to know about.

The warm washcloth and stretches help, but if you’re finding yourself googling symptoms at 2am (been there), it’s probably time for a check-in. My ortho once told me that ongoing jaw pain can sometimes lead to bigger issues like TMJ problems if it’s not addressed early. That freaked me out at first, but it made me realize it’s worth speaking up even if you feel like you’re being dramatic.

Pain shouldn’t be the price of a straight smile. If something feels off, trust your gut.
