What should I do after missing a braces adjustment?
I missed my scheduled braces-adjustment appointment and may be delayed by a few weeks. Should I simply reschedule as soon as possible and continue normal brushing, flossing, and elastic use, or can the delay require changes to my treatment plan?
I don’t have a loose bracket or broken wire, but what symptoms would mean I should contact the orthodontic office sooner, such as increasing pain, swelling, a poking wire, or a noticeable bite change?

A delay of a few weeks doesn’t automatically mean your treatment plan has to change. I wouldn’t assume it’s harmless, either. Reschedule promptly, keep up normal brushing, flossing, and prescribed elastics, and let the orthodontist check the appliance and tooth movement before deciding whether anything needs adjusting.
Call sooner rather than waiting for the appointment if you develop significant or worsening pain, swelling, a loose bracket, a wire poking your cheek, or a sudden noticeable bite change. Don’t double up on elastics or try to bend or remove anything yourself.
The “keep using prescribed elastics” point may need checking with the office, since instructions can depend on the appliance and treatment stage.
- Ask whether they want photos of the brackets, wires, or bite before the rescheduled visit.
- Confirm whether to continue the same elastic schedule, pause it, or follow another interim instruction.
- Seek earlier advice for a poking wire, swelling, worsening pain, or a sudden bite change rather than waiting.
The elastic schedule is the part I’d avoid changing by guesswork. If the office can’t give interim guidance, follow the most recent written prescription you were given rather than stopping, doubling up, or switching schedules just because the appointment was missed. That still deserves confirmation when they’re reachable, especially if the bite has changed or the elastics are causing unusual pain.
Reschedule promptly, and ask the office whether to keep following your current elastic schedule. Until you hear back, don’t stop, double up, or switch schedules by guesswork; follow your most recent written instructions.
