Surprised by what’s lurking in “healthy” snacks?
Funny thing, I actually don’t sweat the dried fruit as much as everyone else seems to. Not saying it’s perfect, but I’ll take a couple dates or apricots over a granola bar loaded with syrups and “natural flavors” any day. I just make sure to brush or rinse soon after, like you mentioned.
Honestly, popcorn’s never been my go-to. Gets stuck all over my teeth, and those little husks are brutal if you’ve got dental work (had a crown pop off once from a rogue kernel - never again). I lean toward nuts or even carrot sticks if I’m trying to keep it simple and tooth-friendly. Not as fun as chips, but at least they don’t leave me worrying about what’s hiding in the ingredients list.
Nutritional yeast is weird, by the way - kinda cheesy but not really cheese? Hard to explain. Worth a shot if you’re bored of parmesan, though.
Totally relate on the popcorn front - one rogue husk and suddenly it’s like you’ve got a splinter in your gums for days. I actually tried those “healthy” veggie chips once, thinking they’d be a safe bet, but they’re basically just potato chips in disguise. Anyone else notice how even “simple” snacks have a mile-long ingredients list now? Makes me wonder if there’s any snack that’s actually just what it says it is... Have you ever tried making your own trail mix, or does that just turn into picking out the chocolate bits and leaving the rest?
Yeah, those “healthy” snacks are wild - half the time, I can’t even pronounce what’s in them. I’ve tried making trail mix, but honestly, the dried fruit always gets stuck in my teeth. Not great for anyone with dental work... I usually just end up eating the nuts and chocolate anyway.
I totally get what you mean - dried fruit is basically the enemy of braces and retainers. I tried eating some apricots once and spent ten minutes fishing bits out with a floss pick. Honestly, I just stick to plain almonds now... way less hassle.
Almonds are definitely easier on hardware, but I actually ran into a different problem - those tiny almond bits get wedged under my retainer wire and it’s like they’re impossible to dislodge without a full-on dental toolkit. Dried fruit is worse, sure, but honestly most “healthy” snacks seem to be out to get us. I even had issues with granola bars... the sticky kind basically becomes dental cement. At this point, I’m suspicious of anything labeled “wholesome.”
