Honestly, I’ve had patients show up with a tooth in a cup of milk, others just holding it in their hand, and—yeah—a few with it tucked in their cheek. Milk’s definitely preferred, but if you’re not near a fridge, saliva’s better than nothing. The real MVP is just getting to the dentist fast. I’ve seen teeth survive all sorts of storage… but time’s usually the dealbreaker.

Is there actually a big difference between using milk vs. just putting the tooth back in your mouth? I’ve heard both, but it sounds like time is the real issue. When my son knocked out his tooth last year, we just had him hold it in his mouth until we got to urgent care. Dentist managed to save it, but now I’m wondering if we should’ve tried harder to find milk. Does it really make that much of a difference?
