Saw a news story about a 7-year-old who lost a front tooth during recess, and the teachers apparently just gave him an ice pack until his parents got there. Made me wonder—shouldn’t they have tried to save the tooth? I always thought you could put it in milk or something, but honestly, I’d probably panic if it was my kid. Anyone ever dealt with this? What’s the first thing you’d do?

Yeah, I always thought you were supposed to try and save the tooth too, like put it in milk or even just keep it in the kid’s mouth if possible? I’d probably freak out in the moment though. My nephew knocked his out last year and my sister just grabbed it and stuck it in a cup of milk until they got to the dentist. Dentist said it helped, but honestly, I’m not sure I’d have remembered that if it was my own kid. The ice pack is good for swelling, but I wish schools had more info on what to do with the actual tooth.

I totally get the panic part—my heart pounds just thinking about it. But honestly, you remembered a lot more than you give yourself credit for. I read that if you put the tooth in milk or even gently back in place (if it’s clean), it can really help. I’d probably freeze up, but having a step-by-step plan in mind makes me feel a bit less anxious. Ice for swelling, keep the tooth moist, and get to the dentist fast…easier said than done when you’re freaking out, but knowing those basics helps me feel a little more prepared. Schools should definitely hand out those tips—would save so much stress.

I always worry I’ll do the wrong thing if it ever happens. Is it really safe to put the tooth back in yourself? I’d be so nervous about messing that up. Milk I could handle, but blood freaks me out. Has anyone actually tried this in real life?

Totally get the worry about messing it up—honestly, I’ve hesitated too. A few years back, my nephew knocked out his front tooth at a picnic. The advice was to put it back in, but none of us felt confident, and he was already panicking. We ended up putting it in a little container of milk and rushed to the dentist. They said that was fine, though apparently time is a huge factor. I still wonder if we should’ve tried to replant it ourselves, but with all the blood and shock, I just didn’t feel equipped. Maybe if you’re really calm under pressure... but I’d probably do the milk thing again.
