Tooth knocked out at the playground—what now?

but who thinks of milk in the moment?

Right? I always wonder how people just have a carton of milk handy when disaster strikes. When my cousin lost a tooth at soccer practice, we ended up wrapping it in a napkin because that’s literally all we had. Dentist later said the root dried out too much. I keep hearing about the milk thing now, but honestly, in the heat of the moment, my brain just goes straight to panic mode, not dairy aisle.

Milk as a tooth-saving hack sounds good in theory, but in real life? My adrenaline would probably have me sprinting for ice or a random water bottle before I even remember milk exists. I read somewhere that saliva is better than nothing if you can’t get to milk—like, just pop the tooth in your cheek (gross, but apparently it helps). Still, who’s thinking clearly enough for that in the chaos? I’d probably just end up clutching the tooth and hoping for the best.

Yeah, I hear you—it’s one of those things that sounds simple until you’re actually in the moment. When my son knocked out his front tooth, I just froze for a second. Milk was nowhere near my mind. We ended up keeping it in a cup of water (which isn’t ideal, apparently) till we got to the dentist. They still managed to get it back in, but it was a close call. If nothing else, just don’t scrub the tooth, and try not to touch the root. Even if you’re panicking, that part really does help.

That’s actually really useful to know about not scrubbing the tooth—my instinct would be to rinse it under the tap and get it “clean,” but I keep reading that it can damage those root cells. The milk thing totally threw me too. I’ve got a little one who’s just started running everywhere, so I’m kind of bracing myself for this scenario. Appreciate hearing real stories, especially since in the moment, logic just goes out the window.

Totally get where you’re coming from—my first reaction would’ve been to scrub the tooth too, just wanting it “clean.” It’s so counterintuitive. When my nephew knocked his tooth out last year, my sister nearly rinsed it under the tap, but the dentist later said that could make things worse. The milk trick seemed weird to us, but apparently it’s legit. I’m always worried about the cost of emergencies like this, but knowing what not to do might save a lot of stress (and money) down the line. You’re not alone—panic mode is real when it happens.
