Guess it’s normal to be hyper-aware after something like that?

Totally normal. My kid had one at 11 (and trust me, I was way more nervous than he was). He spent the first day poking his cheek and making weird faces in the mirror, convinced his mouth was crooked forever. By day two? He forgot all about it—except to brag he “survived a root canal.” The pain being gone was the real win. You’ll probably notice that most. The rest is just your brain playing tricks for a bit.

That’s true for a lot of folks, but I’ve seen some patients who actually stay hyper-aware for a little longer—sometimes even a week or two. It’s not always just “brain tricks.” After a root canal, your mouth can feel different for a while, especially if there was swelling or if you had to keep your jaw open for a long time. Some people notice their bite feels off or that the tooth is more sensitive to pressure, and that can make you second-guess if everything’s healing right.

One thing I’d add: if the discomfort or weird sensations don’t fade after a week or so, or if you’re getting new pain, it’s worth checking in with your dentist. Most of the time, though, it’s just your body adjusting. I’ve had patients tell me they kept checking their smile in the mirror for days, convinced something was off, only to realize later it was just their nerves settling down—literally and figuratively.
