ADJUSTING TO A MOUTH FULL OF NEW HARDWARE: A DAILY TALE

That cloudy film is relentless, isn’t it? I’ve been wearing these for a while now and honestly, I still get that haze no matter how careful I am.

I know exactly what you mean about the science fair vibe - my bathroom counter looks like a sterilization lab these days. I did a deep dive into ultrasonic cleaners, thinking tech would solve it, but honestly? Even with that, that persistent haze just comes back. My research says it’s mostly micro-scratches diffusing light, not actual residue. Still, I keep tweaking my routine... haven’t found a magic fix yet either.

Yeah, I’m right there with you. Tried every cleaning hack I could find, even those little tablets that fizz like mad - still get that weird milky look after a week or two. At this point, I’m convinced it’s just part of the journey.

Man, the struggle is real. Those fizzing tablets are like a tiny science experiment for your mouth, but all they seem to do is make my retainer smell vaguely minty for a few hours. The weird milky haze comes back like clockwork, no matter how many times I brush, soak, or threaten to throw the whole thing out the window.

I used to think maybe I was just lazy, but then I realized it’s basically impossible to keep these things sparkling unless you’re brushing them every time you eat (and who’s got time for that?). I even tried the vinegar trick once - big mistake unless you want your mouthpiece to taste like salad dressing for a week.

Honestly, I think the “milky look” is just part of the deal when you’ve got plastic or metal living in your mouth 24/7. My ortho said it’s mostly mineral buildup from saliva, not actual dirt, which somehow makes it feel slightly less gross. Still, I wish someone would invent a self-cleaning version. Or at least one that doesn’t look like it’s been marinating in milk after a couple days.

On the bright side, I’ve gotten pretty good at keeping a backup case in my bag and pretending I don’t notice the haze when I have to pop it out in public. At this point, I’m just grateful if I don’t accidentally drop it on the bathroom floor. Priorities, right?

If anyone ever figures out the secret to keeping these things crystal clear, I’ll be first in line. Until then, guess we’re all just out here with our cloudy hardware, living our best lives... or at least trying to.

That milky haze is the bane of my existence too. I’ve tried everything short of sandblasting - hot water, toothbrush, even those ultrasonic cleaners. Nothing keeps it totally clear. My orthodontist also blamed minerals, but honestly, sometimes I wonder if it’s just the plastic aging. At least the minty smell is better than nothing...

Same here. I tried those cleaning tablets from the drugstore - didn’t make a dent. The haze just comes back. Not sure it’s worth spending more on fancy cleaners. I’m starting to think it’s just what happens after a while...
