I totally relate to the jaw tension thing—mine always feels like it’s in a vice after a rough night. Custom guard sounds tempting, but honestly, I’m super paranoid about spending a bunch and then not getting relief. Did you ever worry about it making things worse? Like, what if it messes up your bite or something? I chipped a tooth from grinding and now I’m low-key scared of wrecking the rest.
- Totally get worrying about making things worse—my dentist was really chill about that though and explained how they fit the guard to your exact bite, so it shouldn’t mess anything up.
- I actually tried one of those cheap boil-and-bite guards first... honestly, it felt bulky and weird, didn’t help much.
- Ended up getting a custom one after chipping a molar (ugh) and it’s way comfier. Not perfect, but my jaw pain’s less intense now.
- Still freaks me out thinking about more teeth breaking, but the guard gives me some peace of mind.
- Cost was rough, but insurance covered part of it. Definitely worth asking about that.

Same here—those boil-and-bite ones felt like I was trying to sleep with a chunk of plastic Tupperware in my mouth. I was worried a custom guard would feel the same, but honestly, it’s way less annoying. My jaw used to click and ache all the time, now it’s mostly chill. Still cringe at the price tag, but compared to fixing another broken tooth... yeah, I’ll take the guard.
I keep hearing the custom ones are way better, but I’m still kinda skeptical about dropping that much cash. Did you have to get your dentist to fit it, or did you do one of those mail-in kits? Also, how long did it take to actually get used to sleeping with it? The boil-and-bite just made me drool all night, lol.
I totally get the hesitation about spending more, but I went with one of those mail-in kits after my dentist quoted me a price that made my wallet cry. The kit was pretty easy—just had to do the mold at home and send it back. Took maybe two weeks to get the guard. First couple nights were weird (and yeah, drool city), but after a week or so, I barely noticed it. Way more comfortable than the boil-and-bite ones, at least for me.
