Getting used to new dentures: slow and steady or all at once?

I totally get where you’re coming from on the sticker shock with soft foods. I’ve seen a lot of folks surprised by what’s actually manageable with new dentures—like, bananas were way easier than I expected, but I just couldn’t do toast for the longest time. Oatmeal ended up being my go-to, way cheaper than those protein shakes and easy to dress up with fruit or peanut butter. It’s funny how something as simple as a sandwich can suddenly feel like a challenge... but you do find workarounds after a while.

Funny you mention toast—took me months before I even dared to try it again. Even now, I’m still a bit wary of anything with a crust. Honestly, I felt silly at first just eating mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs, but it was the only way I didn’t worry about my dentures slipping. Sandwiches are still hit or miss for me, especially if there’s lettuce or anything crunchy. Guess it’s just a slow process for some of us... I’m definitely not one who could just dive right in all at once.

I get where you’re coming from, but have you ever tried pushing the boundaries just a little bit? My kid’s dentist actually encouraged us to add in something new every week, even if it felt weird. I was nervous for her, but she got used to apples (thin slices, mind you) way sooner than I thought. Maybe it’s different for adults, but sometimes going too slow made her more anxious about food. Did you ever find that waiting made it harder to try new textures?

Waiting definitely made it scarier for me, honestly. The longer I stared at mashed potatoes like they were some kind of enemy, the more convinced I got that everything would feel weird forever. I tried to eat a cracker on day two and it felt like I was chewing cardboard with a mouthful of marbles. But then, weirdly, after a few days of just trying little bites of random stuff, things got less dramatic. Did anyone else have that thing where bread is suddenly the trickiest food?

Bread is a nightmare for me too—sticks to everything and just kind of crumbles apart.

Did you find toast any easier than soft bread, or was it all just as tough? I keep worrying I’ll never eat a sandwich again.
