That “old medicine cabinet” taste is way too real—never fails to catch people off guard. I remember years back, I had a patient who couldn’t handle the clove oil either. She said it felt like her tongue was trying to escape her mouth. Honestly, I get it. The stuff is potent, and the flavor just hangs around forever.

Funny thing is, I’ve seen folks go all-in on those fancy numbing gels or herbal concoctions, but when it comes down to it, a plain saltwater rinse does more good than most people expect. It’s not flashy, but it helps keep things clean and calms the area down a bit. Not magic, but sometimes that’s all you need while you’re waiting for the real fix.

I’ll admit, packing the socket isn’t exactly a spa treatment—more like a necessary evil. But man, when you see someone finally relax after days of misery, you don’t mind the weird taste so much. It’s always wild how the simplest stuff can make the biggest difference.

That clove oil taste is something else—my kid made the most dramatic face, like he’d licked the bottom of a toolbox. I thought he was being over the top until I tried it myself. Honestly, I’ll take saltwater any day. It’s not fancy, but at least it doesn’t make you question your life choices. We did the rinse routine and, yeah, it actually helped more than the pricey stuff from the pharmacy. Still can’t believe how much drama a tiny tooth hole can cause...

Did your kid have trouble keeping up with the saltwater rinses? Mine kept “forgetting” (or maybe just avoiding it because it stings a bit). Curious if you found any tricks to make it easier for them?

My kid hated the saltwater rinses too—said it stung and just made things worse. What worked for us was using lukewarm water and a tiny bit less salt than recommended. Not perfect, but it was enough to keep him from skipping it. We also set reminders on his phone, which helped more than I expected. I wouldn’t say he loved it, but at least it got done most days.
