I’ve tried a few things after my root tip surgery—gels, rinses, even those numbing patches. Here’s what I noticed: the gels worked at first, but after a couple days, my gums felt irritated, almost like they were peeling a bit. I switched to saltwater rinses too, and it was definitely milder. The patches were hit or miss for me… sometimes they stuck, sometimes not, and I didn’t feel much difference in pain relief. Honestly, the old-school saltwater seemed to help the most, even if it’s not high-tech. Just my two cents from trial and error.

I’m actually in the thick of this right now, and honestly, I was kind of freaked out by all the stuff people suggested. I tried one of those numbing gels on day two, but it burned a bit and made me worry I’d messed something up. The saltwater rinse felt super basic, but it didn’t sting or make my mouth feel weird. I keep wondering if there’s some “magic” product out there, but maybe simple is better? Still paranoid about infection though… every twinge has me googling.

I get the paranoia about infection—every weird ache had me convinced something was wrong after mine. Did your dentist give you any specific aftercare tips beyond saltwater rinses? I always wonder if those gels are more trouble than they're worth, honestly. For me, Tylenol and the rinse were enough, but I had to remind myself not to poke at the spot with my tongue all day... easier said than done.

I totally get what you mean about the gels. My dentist pushed one of those medicated gels, but honestly, it cost extra and I didn’t notice any real difference compared to just sticking with saltwater rinses and generic Tylenol. Plus, I’m always a bit skeptical about paying for stuff that might be more marketing than actual benefit. The hardest part for me was not constantly checking the spot with my tongue—seriously, it’s like your brain won’t let you forget it’s there. If anything, I think less is more when it comes to aftercare... as long as there’s no sign of infection, why overcomplicate (or overspend)?

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually found the medicated gel helped a bit with the soreness, especially at night. Maybe it’s a placebo thing, or maybe I just heal slower than most… Either way, I’d rather have the option, even if it costs a few bucks more. Saltwater rinses are great, but sometimes it felt like they weren’t quite enough for me.
