That lines up with what my oral surgeon said after my last extraction. They recommended anything cold, even just ice water if I wasn’t into sweets. I totally agree about the sugar—not ideal for healing, especially if you’re prone to cavities like me. Honestly, I didn’t notice a big difference either between ice cream and sugar-free options... except maybe feeling less guilty about eating so many popsicles. Rinsing well seems key. The cold really does help with swelling more than anything else in my experience.

Cold really does seem to make a difference with swelling, but I get a bit nervous about all the sugar too, especially right after surgery when things are sensitive. I usually tell people to stick with cold things like yogurt or even just ice packs outside the cheek. Rinsing gently is definitely important—just be careful not to swish too hard, since that can mess with the healing. I worry about dry socket way more than I probably should...

You’re right about the sugar—ice cream was tempting, but I mostly stuck with cold yogurt and smoothies. I swear by the ice packs though. Dry socket is no joke, I worried about it too... gentle is key with rinsing, for sure.

I get what you mean about the sugar—ice cream is comforting but honestly, I always felt like the cold yogurt was a safer bet. I’ve had a few extractions over the years, and I swear, those ice packs are a lifesaver. Dry socket is brutal, no kidding. Did anyone else find warm saltwater rinses a bit tricky at first? I was so paranoid about messing up the healing, but it seemed to help with the soreness after a few days. Curious if anyone tried anything besides ice packs for swelling?

I’ve always wondered about the whole ice cream thing—seems like half the people swear by it, and the other half say to avoid sugar at all costs. Personally, I stuck with cold yogurt and applesauce after my last extraction. Ice packs definitely kept the swelling down, but I got tired of holding them on my face after a while.

About the saltwater rinses, I had the same paranoia. The first couple days, I was convinced I’d accidentally spit out the clot or something. It took a bit to get the hang of gently swishing without too much force. Once I did, it really helped with that weird ache you get around day three.

For swelling, I actually tried arnica gel (just on the outside of my cheek, nowhere near the incision), since a friend recommended it. Hard to say if it made a huge difference, but I felt like it soothed some of the tenderness. I also slept propped up for a few nights, which seemed to help keep things from getting too puffy in the morning. Not sure if that’s doctor-approved, but it worked for me.

One thing I wish I’d known sooner: stay away from straws. I thought sipping smoothies would be fine, but my dentist warned me last minute about dry socket risk. That was enough to make me just spoon everything for a week.

Overall, I found a combo of ice packs, gentle saltwater rinses, and taking it easy with food was the best approach. Never tried anything fancy like turmeric or herbal teas—honestly, I was just trying to get through each day without making things worse.
