Weirdest Things That Actually Help With Braces Pain

I totally get what you mean about gum massagers. I picked one up too, thinking it’d be like a spa day for my mouth or something. It just kind of vibrated and tickled, and after a week I couldn’t tell if my gums were healthier or just mildly annoyed. Ended up gathering dust with my other “miracle” gadgets. Waxed floss, though? Absolute lifesaver. I swear, before I switched to waxed, it was like trying to thread barbed wire between my teeth—no thanks.

Those silicone chewies are such a weird little thing, right? My ortho handed me a pack and was like, “Here, these help seat your aligners and with soreness.” Maybe it’s just me, but chewing them felt more like a stress ball for my mouth than actual pain relief. It’s almost like the distraction is half the battle... or maybe the only battle. If they’re free, I’m game, but there’s no way I’d pay for a refill pack.

The one thing that actually surprised me? Cold cucumber slices. Seriously. Someone told me to try them when my teeth were killing me after an adjustment. I thought it sounded ridiculous, but I was desperate—turns out holding a slice against sore spots is super soothing. Way cheaper than those fancy numbing gels too.

Also, ice water sips between meals. Not groundbreaking, but it’s the only thing that made eating less miserable for me during the first week with new wires. Ibuprofen helped, but cold stuff was more immediate.

I’ve heard some people swear by eating frozen grapes or even biting gently on a chilled spoon. Haven’t tried the spoon thing yet because I’m clumsy and would probably chip a bracket, but hey, desperate times...

Bottom line: most gadgets are just expensive distractions, but sometimes the weird home remedies actually do the trick. If nothing else, at least you get to eat cucumber like you’re at a spa while your teeth hate you.

Not gonna lie, I’m actually in the minority here—I swear by my water flosser. Everyone says it’s just another overpriced gadget, but for me, blasting cold water around my brackets feels way better than regular floss. Maybe it’s the pressure, maybe it’s just the novelty, but it takes the edge off after adjustments. Cold cucumber sounds chill (pun intended), but I’ll stick to my techy tools for now.

- Water flosser squad here too. Not sure if it’s placebo or what, but

“blasting cold water around my brackets feels way better than regular floss”
—same. Something about the pressure just hits different after a tightening.
- Tried the cucumber thing once. Didn’t do much for me, but frozen grapes? Weirdly soothing. Pop one in, let it melt a bit, seems to numb stuff for a minute.
- Wax is still my MVP for pokey wires though. All the gadgets in the world and I’m still rolling tiny wax balls like a kid with Play-Doh.
- Ibuprofen helps but I try not to overdo it. Sometimes just chewing on a soft silicone mouthguard takes the edge off if my teeth are super sensitive.

Guess everyone’s got their “thing.” For me, tech + random freezer snacks = less pain, more chill.

Frozen grapes are genius. I used to swear by ice packs, but grapes are way less messy and you can actually eat them after. For me, the water flosser is a must—especially after adjustments. Wax is a classic, though sometimes it just falls off and I end up swallowing it (gross, but harmless). Never tried a mouthguard for soreness, but now I’m curious... It’s wild how much trial and error goes into finding what works.

Frozen grapes are clever, but I’ve actually found that a warm saltwater rinse helps me more than anything cold. I know everyone swears by ice or frozen stuff, but sometimes the ache just feels better with a little warmth. Wax is a lifesaver, though—totally agree there.
