Why Does Getting Braces Make Me So Nervous?

Drying the bracket really does make a difference—my kid learned that pretty quick after a few failed attempts with the wax just sliding off. We keep tissues in every bag and car now, feels over-the-top but it saves a lot of whining later. As for the water flosser, I totally get why you’re frustrated. My first few tries ended with water everywhere except where I wanted. Now we stick to using it leaning over the sink, mouth mostly closed—less mess, still not perfect, but it helps.

The food paranoia is real. I still check my kid’s teeth way more than necessary, even though nobody else seems to notice. It does get easier once you settle into a routine. The nerves stick around for a bit, but after a while, you stop thinking about it every minute. Hang in there—it’s all way more normal than it feels at first.

Haha, I thought I was the only one stockpiling tissues like some kind of dental prepper. Honestly, between the wax, the tissues, and the endless toothbrushes, I feel like I need a separate budget category just for “braces survival gear.” The water flosser thing—yeah, I basically gave my bathroom a shower the first time. Still, cheaper than replacing a carpet if I tried it in the living room, right? It’s a learning curve, but at least it’s not boring.

That water flosser is a wild ride at first, right? I sprayed my mirror more than my teeth the first week. And yeah, the “braces survival kit” is real—my glove compartment looks like a mini dental aisle. I used to feel silly carrying all that stuff, but honestly, it’s made life so much easier. The nerves do settle after a while, especially once you figure out your own routine. Hang in there—it gets less overwhelming, promise.

I mean... yes and no? I thought my nerves would magically disappear after a week or two, but honestly, every time I get a new wire or something pokes me in the cheek, I’m right back to square one. The “routine” part is real, but there are still days when my mouth feels like it’s hosting a tiny metal construction site.

And about the “braces survival kit”—I’d argue half the stuff in mine never got used. I bought every wax, rinse, and mini brush Amazon recommended, but ended up just sticking to wax and a regular toothbrush most days. Water flosser is fun, but also kind of a water park for my bathroom. Still worth it though.

Guess what I’m saying is: it does get easier, but don’t stress if you still have off days even months in. It’s not just you.
