Mouthwash can help a bit, especially if it’s got fluoride, but it’s not really a substitute for brushing. It doesn’t remove plaque the way brushing does. I get the temptation to brush in bed—sometimes that’s all you can manage—but lying down makes it harder to spit everything out properly. I’ve seen people end up with more sensitivity when they do it that way, maybe from not rinsing well enough. If it gets you brushing at all though, it’s better than nothing... just try to rinse after if possible.

I get where you’re coming from about mouthwash not being a full replacement, but honestly, when I was in a rough patch, using a fluoride rinse at least made my mouth feel less gross. Sometimes I’d swish it before bed if brushing felt like too much. It’s not perfect, but for me it was better than nothing and kept my breath in check. I think small steps count, especially on tough days.

I totally get the “small steps count” thing. My kid went through a phase where brushing was just too much some nights, and we did exactly that—swished with fluoride rinse. It’s not a perfect substitute, but it at least kept things manageable until routines got back on track. Sometimes we’d even use those disposable finger wipes if a toothbrush felt overwhelming. Not ideal, but better than nothing when motivation’s low.
