My daughter’s tooth was just hanging by a thread for days. She kept wiggling it with her fingers, but then she got tired of waiting and bit into an apple—worked like a charm, though I was worried it would hurt more. Dentist did say as long as there’s no pain or swelling, waiting it out is fine, but I get nervous about infection if it’s stuck too long. Anyone else’s kid totally freaked out by the blood?

I get the temptation to just yank it out with an apple or something, but honestly, I feel like letting the tooth fall out on its own is usually less traumatic for kids. My son totally panicked when he saw blood after we tried the old “bite into toast” trick—he was convinced something was wrong. I know people worry about infection, but unless there’s swelling or pain, I really think patience is the way to go. Kids seem less freaked out if it just drops out during play or eating, rather than making a big event out of it.

That’s interesting, because my parents always did the “tie it to a doorknob” thing with me and honestly, it was kinda traumatic. I get wanting to speed things up, but now that I’m seeing it from the other side, I’d be way more chill about it for my own kid. The blood is what freaked me out too, not the pain. I guess unless it’s just dangling by a thread, waiting it out seems less stressful for everyone. Does anyone actually worry about infection with baby teeth though? I never really thought about that part...

I totally get where you’re coming from—those old-school “quick fixes” can be a little intense in hindsight. I’ve seen a few kids who were genuinely scared after someone tried to yank out a loose tooth, so I lean toward the low-key, let-nature-do-its-thing approach too. You mentioned infection—honestly, it’s not super common with baby teeth, especially if the tooth is just loose and not decayed or broken. But if there’s swelling, pus, or a bad smell, that’s when I’d start to worry.

The blood can look dramatic, but it’s usually just from the gum being irritated. Most of the time, a little rinse with salt water is all you need. I do wonder though—has anyone ever actually had a kid get an infection from a wobbly tooth that wasn’t ready to come out? I’ve only heard of issues when the tooth was forced out way too early or there was already a cavity brewing. Curious if that matches what others have seen...

I’ve actually seen a mild infection pop up once when a loose tooth was left dangling for weeks—no cavity, just food getting trapped and the kid not brushing well because it hurt. Gums got red and puffy, nothing dramatic but still needed antibiotics. Guess it’s rare, but not impossible if oral hygiene slips.
