I never really got much out of the heating pad either—felt more like a placebo than anything. For me, it was all about managing the “mechanical irritation” from the brackets. I got weirdly technical with it and started using a silicone-based wax instead of the standard stuff, which seemed to last longer through the night. Ibuprofen definitely helped, but I always worried about building up a tolerance if I relied on it too much. As for food, I basically lived on scrambled eggs and protein shakes... not exactly gourmet, but at least I didn’t have to chew.

That brings back memories—mashed potatoes and yogurt were my go-tos. I totally get the concern about ibuprofen. I used to alternate with acetaminophen sometimes, just to mix things up. The silicone wax is a smart move; the regular stuff always vanished by 2 a.m. for me.

I hear you on the wax situation—honestly, I always found even the silicone kind would slide off if I ate or drank anything. Instead, I started using those little orthodontic mouthguards at night. Not the prettiest look, but way more comfortable than waking up with raw cheeks. As for painkillers, I actually felt like alternating meds didn’t help as much as a warm compress before bed. Maybe it’s just me, but the heat seemed to take the edge off better than pills.

It’s interesting how different things work for each of us. I’ve always been a little nervous about using heat on my face with braces, just because my orthodontist once mentioned it could make inflammation worse in some cases. I might be overthinking it, but I stick to cold packs—maybe it’s just a comfort thing for me. The numbing helps me get to sleep, especially after an adjustment.

I do get what you mean about the mouthguards at night, though. They’re not exactly stylish, but I’d rather look goofy than wake up with cuts in my cheeks. Wax never lasted more than an hour for me, either. I guess we all have to experiment a bit to find what gives us peace of mind (and less pain) at night.

That’s really reassuring to hear someone else say the wax just doesn’t stay put. I swear, mine vanishes before I even finish brushing my teeth at night—then I’m just back to square one with sore cheeks. I’ve also been a little hesitant about the heat thing, probably because I tend to overthink stuff after reading every possible side effect online. My orthodontist was kind of vague about it, so I defaulted to cold packs too. It’s not perfect, but like you said, the numbing helps enough that I can actually fall asleep.

I totally get the “looking goofy” part with mouthguards. I felt super self-conscious at first, but honestly, the relief is worth it. It’s weird how much trial and error goes into just surviving those first few weeks with braces. Sometimes it feels like everyone has their own secret trick that works for them and nowhere else. At least we’re all figuring it out together, right?
