Weird tricks that actually helped my tooth after a root canal

I totally get what you mean about the stress of trying to follow all the “rules”—it can almost make things worse. But honestly, I found that some of those standard tips didn’t really work for me either. After my root canal, everyone kept telling me to sleep propped up and use ice packs, but I just couldn’t get comfortable. My neck was killing me, and I spent half the night worrying if I was making my recovery harder.

Eventually, I just ditched the ice packs (they made me tense up more than anything), and instead, I focused on staying hydrated and eating soft foods that didn’t make my jaw ache. Warm compresses actually felt better for me, even though most advice says to stick with cold. Maybe it’s not textbook, but it helped me relax enough to actually sleep.

And yeah, the anxiety around “doing it wrong” is real—I kept googling every little thing (“Is this normal swelling?” “Did I ruin my root canal by yawning too wide?”). In hindsight, I wish I'd trusted my body a bit more instead of stressing over every instruction. Everyone’s pain tolerance and comfort level is different anyway.

If you’re finding that certain tricks just aren’t working or are making things worse, maybe it’s okay to tweak them a bit? Sometimes listening to your own body is more helpful than following every rule to the letter. For what it’s worth, my dentist told me as long as I wasn’t doing anything extreme, it was fine to find what worked for me.

Not sure if that helps at all—just wanted to say you’re definitely not alone in feeling overwhelmed by all the “shoulds.”

That’s interesting about the warm compress—I’ve read mixed things, but honestly, cold made my jaw tense up too. I’m always second-guessing if I’m doing the “right” thing after dental work. It’s tough to know what’s just normal healing and what’s not. I do think hydration and soft foods make a bigger difference than people realize. Sometimes the standard advice just doesn’t fit everyone, you know?

Totally get this—after my first root canal, I was convinced I was doing everything wrong. Warm compresses seemed to help me, but then I’d freak out reading somewhere else that cold’s better. Also, I swear eating mashed potatoes and drinking tons of water made more difference than the pain meds. It’s like, you have to figure out your own “normal” and not panic over every weird twinge... easier said than done though.

I totally relate to the mashed potatoes thing—soft foods were my go-to after my root canal. I kept second guessing if I should be icing or using heat, too. Honestly, I just stuck with whatever felt less weird that day... sometimes that meant switching it up mid-afternoon. I wish there was a clear answer for all this stuff, but yeah, everyone’s mouth seems to have its own rules.

I totally get you on the whole “what even helps?” thing. After my last root canal, I tried both heat and ice and honestly, it was a toss-up—some days ice felt soothing, other times it just made things ache more. My weirdest trick was sleeping with my head propped up on extra pillows; it actually helped with swelling way more than I expected. Soft foods were life... but I did sneak in some scrambled eggs early on, which was risky but worth it. Everyone’s got their own hacks, for sure.
