toothbrush dilemma: cartoon characters or ergonomic handles?

I'm stuck between getting my kiddo a toothbrush with his favorite cartoon character (he's obsessed with Paw Patrol right now, you know how it is...) or one of those ergonomic ones that's supposed to be easier for little hands. Anyone tried both? Which worked better for your kids?

We went through something similar with my niece - she was all about Frozen at the time. Honestly, the cartoon toothbrush got her excited about brushing initially, but the novelty wore off pretty quickly. The ergonomic one, though, seemed to help her grip better and brush more effectively on her own. Maybe start with the Paw Patrol one to build enthusiasm, then switch to ergonomic once he's comfortable with the routine? Worked well for us anyway...
A small “best of both worlds” option might be:
- **Soft bristles + child-sized head** - gentler and easier to maneuver.
- **Non-slip, ergonomic handle** - helps little hands keep a steady grip, especially with wet fingers.
- **Favorite character** - a nice bonus if it gets him to the sink without a negotiation worthy of a software update.
The character can help with enthusiasm, but fit and comfort usually matter more for actually brushing well. If you find a Paw Patrol brush with those features, that may be the easiest win.
One caveat on the “soft bristles + child-sized head” point: “child-sized” can still vary quite a bit between brands. Is the head small enough to reach the back molars without bumping the cheeks or triggering gagging? An oversized head can make thorough brushing difficult, even when the handle has a good non-slip grip.
