How soft is too soft for toothbrush bristles?

I keep seeing “ultra soft” or “extra soft” toothbrushes everywhere, but I’m not sure if they actually clean well or just feel nice? I tried one and it almost felt like it wasn’t doing anything. Does anyone have a favorite brand or type that’s gentle but still gets the job done?

I get what you mean—those ultra soft ones almost feel like you’re brushing with a marshmallow, lol. I tried Curaprox 5460 after reading a bunch of reviews, and honestly, it’s super gentle but still seems to clear out the gunk. I do spend a bit longer brushing though, just to make sure. Medium bristles always left my gums feeling raw, so I’ll take the trade-off.

Totally get the marshmallow vibe—some of those ultra soft brushes are almost comically gentle. I’ve tried the Curaprox 5460 too, and honestly, it’s like brushing with a tiny pillow. But yeah, you do have to spend a bit more time to get everything clean. Personally, my gums are drama queens and freak out with anything firmer than “soft,” so I’m willing to trade speed for comfort. I do sometimes wonder if I’m missing spots, but so far, no angry dentist lectures... yet.

I feel this so much—my gums basically throw a tantrum if I even look at a medium brush. But I get nervous about missing spots, too. Does your dentist ever check with one of those dye things to see if you missed anything? I’m kinda paranoid about plaque hiding in weird places, especially since I switched to a super soft brush. Have you noticed any difference in how your teeth feel between checkups?

Those dye tablets are wild—one time I came out looking like I’d just eaten a bag of blue raspberry candy. My hygienist swears by them, but honestly, I’m too lazy to use them at home. I do notice my teeth feel less “squeaky clean” with the ultra soft brushes, but my gums bleed way less, so it’s a trade-off. I wish there was a brush that magically cleaned everything but didn’t feel like a wire scrubber... Still searching for that unicorn.
