How soft is too soft for toothbrush bristles?

I wish there was a brush that magically cleaned everything but didn’t feel like a wire scrubber... Still searching for that unicorn.

Honestly, if someone invents that unicorn brush, I’ll be first in line. The “less squeaky clean” feeling with ultrasoft bristles is super common, but you’re not missing out—those hard bristles do more harm than good long-term. If your gums are happier, you’re winning.

That’s been my experience too. I switched to ultrasoft bristles after my hygienist suggested it, and honestly, my gums stopped bleeding almost right away. I do sometimes wonder if it’s *too* gentle, though—like, am I leaving stuff behind? But my checkups have actually improved. I kind of miss that “super clean” feeling, but not enough to go back to the scratchy ones.

I’ve wondered about that too. Switched to super soft and noticed less bleeding, but sometimes I double-check with floss just in case. Hygienist said as long as I’m brushing well, it’s fine. Guess it’s more about technique than bristle strength?

I tend to agree, but I still get nervous that a super soft brush won’t get everything, especially around my gumline. I switched after some gum recession and it helped, but sometimes I follow up with those little interdental brushes—just feels more thorough. My dentist said soft is safest if you’re brushing long enough and not rushing. Still, I kinda miss that squeaky clean feeling from firmer bristles... anyone else?

I totally get what you mean about missing that squeaky clean feeling. When I first switched to a super soft brush, I kept thinking it wasn’t doing enough, especially since I’m kind of paranoid about plaque. But my dentist said the firmer bristles were actually what caused my gum issues in the first place. I still have this urge to press harder or scrub longer, but apparently that just makes things worse.

Honestly, it took me a while to trust that “gentle” could actually work. Now I focus more on brushing each section for a bit longer and using those little floss picks. It’s not quite the same as that rough, super-clean feeling, but my gums stopped bleeding and receding so much. Maybe it’s just getting used to a new normal? Still feels weird sometimes, though...
