Ever since my type 2 diagnosis, I swear my dentist sees me more than my friends do. I thought brushing and flossing was enough, but apparently blood sugar swings can really mess with your gums? I noticed my gums bled more after eating a ton of carbs one week (oops). Now I’m trying to figure out what snacks won’t make things worse. Cheese sticks seem okay, but fruit gets tricky. Also, mouth feels dry all the time, which is just… ugh.

Anyone else get weird dental stuff after changing their diet for diabetes? Any foods that help (or totally wreck) your mouth? I’d love to hear what’s actually worked for real people, not just what Google says.

Yeah, we ran into this with my daughter after her diagnosis. I used to think if she kept up the brushing and flossing, she'd be fine, but the dentist pointed out her gums were more inflamed than before—even with good habits. The dry mouth thing is real, too. She says it feels like cotton sometimes.

Snacks are tricky. Cheese sticks and nuts are her go-tos now, but fruit is hit or miss. Berries seem a bit better than apples or bananas for her blood sugar, but she still has to rinse after eating them. Crackers or anything starchy just seem to stick to her teeth and make things worse.

Have you tried switching up toothpaste or using a mouth rinse for dry mouth? We found one at the pharmacy that helped a bit—no miracle, but it took the edge off. It’s definitely a learning curve. Don’t beat yourself up over a carb week—you’re figuring it out, and honestly, that’s all any of us can do.

Dry mouth is a nightmare for me too. I switched to a toothpaste for sensitive gums, but honestly, it’s the rinsing and sipping water all day that helps most. My dentist suggested a xylitol gum—seems to help a bit with moisture, though I’m always nervous about chewing gum with crowns. I get anxious every time my gums bleed, even when I’m doing everything right. It feels like no matter what, diabetes makes things harder… but you’re right, all we can do is keep trying.

I totally get the anxiety around bleeding gums, especially when you’re doing everything by the book. For me, it’s always worse when my blood sugar’s out of whack—even if I’m brushing and flossing like a champ. I tried xylitol mints instead of gum since I’ve got a bridge and chewing gum freaks me out. The constant sipping water helps, but honestly, there are days it just feels exhausting. Sometimes I wonder if anyone without diabetes really gets how relentless this is... but yeah, just gotta keep at it.

Yeah, the dry mouth is brutal—my dentist said it’s partly the meds, partly the blood sugar. I tried those fancy mouthwashes for dry mouth, but honestly, they’re pricey and didn’t do much. Water’s cheaper and works about as well for me. Cheese sticks are my go-to too, but I miss apples. Every time I eat one, I feel like my gums get angry. I’ve noticed even sugar-free hard candies help a bit with dryness, but I have to watch the laxative effect. Anyone else just use plain old baking soda sometimes? It’s cheap and seems to help with the weird taste I get.
