Swollen gums and braces: is this normal or just me?

Marshmallow gums is the perfect way to put it. I remember looking in the mirror after my first adjustment and thinking, “Wait, is this normal or am I about to lose a tooth?” The paranoia is real. I definitely went overboard with the brushing at first too - felt like I was trying to scrub away my own gums. My dentist actually told me to chill out a bit because apparently, gums don’t appreciate being sandpapered.

Interdental brushes are honestly underrated. At first I thought they were just another thing for the oral hygiene aisle, but they do get into all those weird angles around brackets. Saltwater rinses saved me more than once after a rough wire change - cheap and surprisingly soothing.

I still get anxious if my gums look even a little puffy, but every checkup has been fine. Maybe we’re all just hyper-aware because braces make you stare at your teeth way more than anyone else ever will. It’s annoying, but pretty normal from what I’ve seen.

That’s hilarious because I’m basically living this right now. I keep thinking if I brush just a little more, I’ll somehow prevent all the “brace face” issues, but my gums are like, please stop. I even bought one of those fancy electric toothbrushes with all the settings, but honestly, I’m not convinced it’s doing anything magical.

Does anyone else get those weird sore spots in between the teeth after adjustments? I can’t tell if it’s just the pressure from the wires or if I’m actually bruising my gums with all the extra cleaning. I tried saltwater rinses too, but I’m always paranoid I’m not mixing the right amount of salt. Is there such a thing as too much salt for your mouth, or am I just overthinking it?

Totally get this. When I first got braces, I was convinced that brushing harder and more often would somehow cancel out all the possible problems. Ended up with these super sensitive, puffy gums that hurt way more than the actual adjustments. My orthodontist basically told me to back off and use a soft brush, gentle circles, nothing wild.

I do get those sore spots between teeth after they tighten the wires. In my case, it’s definitely from the pressure - not from brushing too much (though I used to worry about that too). The saltwater rinse thing is funny - I always wonder if I’m making it too salty or not salty enough. My ortho said a pinch in a glass is fine, but honestly, I just eyeball it now and haven’t had issues.

If you’re feeling paranoid about bruising your gums, it might help to switch to a softer brush head and ease up a bit. It’s tough not to overdo it, but your mouth will thank you.

I kinda have the opposite problem - if I don’t brush like a maniac, I get that gross fuzzy feeling on my teeth, especially with all the wires and brackets catching stuff. But yeah, my gums definitely started protesting when I went overboard. Anyone else feel like those electric toothbrushes are almost too intense with braces? I had to switch back to manual for a while because it felt like my mouth was in a wind tunnel. Maybe there’s a sweet spot we’re all missing - like, just enough brushing to avoid the “brace face” funk but not enough to make your gums wave the white flag.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean. The first time I used my electric brush after getting braces, it felt like my teeth were being sandblasted. My gums were not amused. I tried lowering the speed, but then it just tickled and didn’t clean much, so I’m back to the old-school brush half the time.

I swear, there’s gotta be some magical in-between method nobody’s told us about. Like, do people actually use those tiny interdental brushes religiously? I keep losing them or poking myself in the gum - maybe that’s why mine stay puffy half the time.

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if the “brace face funk” is just unavoidable unless you have superhuman brushing skills. Anyone else just give up and swish water constantly between meals?
