Swollen gums and braces: is this normal or just me?
My gums used to swell up like crazy when I first started braces (felt like balloons some days), but things settled down once I got into a routine.
That “balloon” feeling is super common at the start - your gums are just reacting to all the new hardware and maybe a bit of extra plaque sneaking in. The tiny brushes are tricky at first (I still find them rolling under my desk sometimes...), but it sounds like you figured out what works for you. Honestly, there’s no single “right” tool - if floss threaders get the job done, that’s a win.
Swelling usually calms down as you get better at cleaning around the brackets and wires. If it ever gets worse, or your gums bleed a lot, that’s worth checking in about, but a little puffiness at the beginning is almost a rite of passage. Keeping up with whatever routine you’ll actually do (even if it’s not perfect) is way better than stressing over the “ideal” technique. Consistency trumps perfection every time.
That “balloon” gum stage is the worst, right? I remember day 3 of braces, looking in the mirror and thinking my gums were about to start floating away. For me, it was a combo of awkward brushing and just my mouth straight-up rebelling against all the new metal. Once I got the hang of the little brushes (and stopped losing them in my backpack), things mellowed out. I still get a bit of puffiness if I slack on cleaning, but nothing like those first few weeks.
“looking in the mirror and thinking my gums were about to start floating away”
Totally relate to that - mine looked like they were auditioning for a parade float. I remember the first week, my gums were so puffy I felt like I’d been chewing on marshmallows instead of food. It’s wild how much difference those little brushes make once you figure out the right angle. Miss a day though, and it’s like your mouth’s plotting revenge... The struggle is real, but it does get better.
Braces really do a number on your gums at first. I remember thinking my mouth looked like it belonged in a cartoon - my gums got so puffy, just brushing felt like poking a balloon. It’s actually pretty common, especially in those first few weeks. All that hardware gives plaque and food more places to hide, and the gums don’t love that.
I’ve seen people get frustrated and brush harder, but honestly, gentle and thorough is the way to go. Those tiny brushes (interdental or proxy brushes) are a total game-changer once you find the right size for your gaps. I had to try a couple before one fit well enough to get around the brackets without making my gums angrier.
If the swelling sticks around longer than a week or two, or if you notice bleeding that doesn’t improve with better cleaning, it’s worth checking in with your orthodontist. Sometimes there’s more going on - like an allergy to the metal or even just overzealous brushing. But yeah… marshmallow mouth is a rite of passage for most of us. It does calm down, promise.

I remember being so worried about my gums looking inflamed and honestly just feeling gross all the time. It’s hard not to panic and start brushing like crazy, but gentle really is key. I was convinced I was doing something wrong for weeks, but things did get better once I found a softer brush and slowed down. You're definitely not alone - swollen gums are such a common part of the process, even if it feels weird or scary at first.
