I tried using a cold water bottle once in a pinch... not quite the same, but it helped a bit with the swelling.

I totally get that—I've done the water bottle trick too, and yeah, not as good as an ice pack but better than nothing. Do you ever worry you’re overdoing the salt water rinses? I always wonder if it’s possible to irritate your gums more, but then I get paranoid about infection if I skip a rinse. The alcohol-free mouthwash helps me feel less anxious about the burning, but I’m never sure if it’s actually working. Braces really are a test of patience...

I relate to this a lot. I used to rinse with salt water every time I felt any swelling, but after a while my gums started to feel raw. Now I just stick to once or twice a day, and it seems to help without making things worse. Alcohol-free mouthwash is a lifesaver for me too—less sting, but sometimes I still wonder if it’s actually doing anything. Braces really do test your nerves... hang in there, it does get easier.

I totally get the anxiety about overdoing it. I’ve had a lot of dental work over the years—braces, crowns, even a couple implants—and my gums have always been the sensitive type. When I had braces, I remember being so worried about infection that I’d rinse with salt water after every single meal. Ended up with sore, almost peeling gums for a bit... not fun. My dentist said once or twice a day is plenty, and honestly, I felt less raw after cutting back.

Ice packs helped me more than rinsing when things got really swollen, but I was always nervous about missing a rinse and getting an infection. It’s such a weird balance—too much care can make things worse, but skipping feels risky. Alcohol-free mouthwash stings less for sure, but sometimes I wonder if it’s just placebo at this point.

Braces were rough on my nerves too. I still double-check my brushing sometimes, even though they’re long gone. Guess old habits stick around...

That’s so relatable—overdoing the rinsing thing was my default after every wire adjustment. I remember thinking, “If a little salt water is good, more must be better,” but all I got was angry gums and that weird peeling you mentioned. It’s tough to trust that less is more when you’re worried about infection, especially if you’ve had a rough dental history.

I always ended up falling back on ice packs too, especially when my cheeks puffed up after tightening. Honestly, I think the cold just numbed everything long enough for me to chill out. It’s funny you mention alcohol-free mouthwash feeling like a placebo… sometimes I’d use it just because it seemed like I should be doing something, even if it didn’t really change much.

The double-checking your brushing thing? Yeah, same here. It’s like muscle memory at this point. I guess it just comes down to finding that balance where your mouth feels clean but not raw. Did your dentist ever suggest any specific routines, or was it mostly trial and error for you too?

- Definitely did the “more must be better” thing with salt water. Ended up with gums that felt like they’d been sandpapered.

“The double-checking your brushing thing? Yeah, same here.”
I still catch myself doing this, even post-braces.
- Dentist just told me: rinse 2x a day, don’t overdo it. Didn’t listen at first... paid for it later.
- Ice packs worked way better for me than rinses when swelling hit. Rinses helped with soreness, but didn’t do much for puffiness.
- Alcohol-free mouthwash? Honestly, felt pointless, but I kept using it out of habit.
