Metal, ceramic, or clear aligners? What worked for your kid?

We actually had a different experience with the pricing. Our ortho had a pretty big gap between metal and ceramic—metal was definitely the budget option for us. I remember asking about clear aligners too, but those were way out of our price range unless insurance chipped in (which it didn’t). I get what you mean about the adjustment period though. My daughter hated the metal brackets at first, but after a couple weeks, she stopped complaining unless she bit her cheek or something. Funny thing is, her friend had ceramic and still needed wax for the first month, so I’m not sure the discomfort is that different, just maybe less noticeable?

Did you notice your son cared about how they looked? That was the big thing for us—my kid didn’t care at all, but her best friend was super self-conscious and begged for ceramic. I kind of wonder if the extra cost is worth it for some kids, or if they just adapt.

My son honestly didn’t care about the look either—he picked metal and just rolled with it. I think some kids fixate on the appearance, but others are more chill. The wax thing cracked me up too… ceramic or metal, they both end up with a mouthful of wax at first. I do wonder if the extra cost is worth it unless your kid is really bothered by how they look.

My daughter went with ceramic because she thought they’d be “invisible,” but honestly, you can still see them—just a bit less shiny. She was super self-conscious at first, but after a week, she didn’t really care. The wax thing is wild though, right? We had little wax bits everywhere for a while. If your kid isn’t too bothered by looks, I’d say the extra cost for ceramic isn’t really justified. Metal does the job and seems sturdier anyway.

My grandkids both did metal, and honestly, after the first couple weeks, nobody really noticed them—or cared. I get the appeal of ceramic, but the price difference is just wild, and they’re not as “invisible” as folks think. Plus, metal brackets seem to hold up better if your kid’s a bit rough on snacks. The wax bits drove us nuts too... found one stuck to the dog once. In my book, unless your kid is really self-conscious, metal’s the way to go.

That’s been my experience too—kids (and parents) worry a lot at first, but honestly, most people stop noticing metal brackets pretty fast. Ceramic looks nice but I do get nervous about how fragile they can be, especially with younger kids who snack a lot. The wax everywhere... still makes me laugh, but I get the frustration. Metal’s not glamorous, but it’s reliable.
