Insurance covering crowns for kids’ molars is hit or miss, honestly. I’ve seen some plans cover maybe half, but a lot barely make a dent, just like you said. It’s frustrating, especially when it’s not really optional after a root canal on a molar—those teeth just don’t hold up with a filling long-term. I’ve had parents ask if waiting’s okay, but if the tooth is permanent and already had a root canal, it’s usually better to crown it sooner rather than risk another emergency. The costs sting, though... I wish insurance kept up with the reality of what kids need.

I totally get where you’re coming from. The insurance piece is just unpredictable. Like you mentioned,

“it’s not really optional after a root canal on a molar—those teeth just don’t hold up with a filling long-term.”
That’s been my experience too, especially with permanent molars in kids. I’ve seen a couple of families try to skip the crown to save money, but honestly, the tooth almost always ends up cracking or breaking down the line. Then it’s either another emergency trip or, worst case, extraction.

What’s wild is how some plans call a crown “cosmetic” and barely cover it, even though structurally it’s kind of essential after the nerve’s gone. I do wish insurance would catch up with the actual needs here.

I will say, we did wait a few months once (insurance stuff) and it was nerve-wracking every time my kid even bit into something crunchy. Not worth the stress. Wish there was a better system for this, honestly.

Crowns after a root canal on a molar really aren’t just a “nice to have”—I’ve seen way too many molars fracture after a root canal when there was just a filling. The thing is, once that nerve’s gone, the tooth gets pretty brittle. It’s like the shell of a house with no support beams inside. Fillings just don’t give enough protection, especially if you’ve got a heavy bite or like crunchy stuff.

I totally get the frustration with insurance. Drives me nuts when they call it cosmetic. I mean, if a molar cracks in half, nobody’s gonna see it, but you’ll definitely feel it... and the fix is way more expensive than a crown would’ve been. I actually had one parent try to “wait and see” with their teenager’s molar, hoping they could get away with just a filling. Six months later, the tooth split right down the middle on a popcorn kernel. Ended up needing an extraction and an implant. That was a rough conversation.

That said, there are rare cases where we can hold off on a crown for a bit—like if it’s a premolar, or the tooth isn’t under much chewing pressure. But for molars, especially for kids who might not be the gentlest eaters, I really wouldn’t risk it. The anxiety you mentioned about your kid eating crunchy stuff? That’s real. I’ve seen people baby a tooth for months, but all it takes is one wrong bite.

I wish insurance companies would see things from the practical side. They end up paying out more when people have to get extractions or bridges later anyway. The system just doesn’t make sense sometimes.

If cost is a big issue, sometimes you can get a temporary crown or a build-up while you save up, but it’s not ideal for the long haul. Just my two cents from seeing this play out again and again.

Yeah, insurance logic just baffles me sometimes. Like, if I break a tooth in half, that’s not cosmetic—it’s just pain and a giant bill. I had a molar root canal a couple years ago and tried to cheap out with just a filling... bad move. The thing cracked on a tortilla chip (of all things), and I ended up paying way more for a crown and extra work. Lesson learned: molars are not worth rolling the dice on, especially if you’re a snack fiend like me.
