Dental crowns: zirconia vs porcelain, which lasts longer?

My daughter went through getting a crown a couple years agoβ€”ended up choosing zirconia. Dentist recommended it since it's pretty durable for younger patients who aren't exactly careful with their teeth yet (think biting pencils, ice cubes, etc.). So far it's held up great, and she hasn't complained about bulkiness or discomfort at all. But I totally get your concern about bite changes...even tiny shifts can feel huge at first. If you're super sensitive to that kind of thing, maybe mention it specifically to your dentist? They can usually adjust the crown a bit more carefully during the fitting. Anyway, porcelain sounds like it worked well for others here, but just wanted to share our experience with zirconia in case it helps. Good luck!

Totally agree with this. Had porcelain crowns myself, and the dentist spent extra time tweaking the bite. Felt weird for a few days, but now I don't even notice them...hang in there, it'll settle!

Yeah, it's funny how sensitive our bite can beβ€”I've had zirconia crowns for about three years now, and at first, it felt like chewing was totally off. Eventually, everything settled nicely though...curious if zirconia lasts noticeably longer than porcelain in the long run?

Glad to hear things eventually settled for you! My daughter got porcelain crowns about two years ago, and we had a similar experienceβ€”initially she complained about her bite feeling weird, but now it's like nothing ever happened. Our dentist mentioned zirconia might be tougher overall, especially for younger patients who might grind their teeth. Wondering if anyone's noticed a difference in durability specifically related to teeth grinding or clenching habits...?

I've had porcelain crowns for years and I grind my teeth pretty badly at night...they've held up okay, but my dentist recently suggested zirconia next time since they're supposed to handle grinding better. Might be worth considering if you're prone to clenching or grinding.
