A splint reduces tooth contact, but morning stiffness is different
If a TMJ splint seems to reduce nighttime tooth contact but the jaw feels stiffer in the morning, or the bite feels different after taking it out, how does the prescribing dentist decide whether that’s an adjustment-period issue or a reason to check the fit?
Does it matter whether the appliance is a stabilization splint or another design? I’d be interested in what details are most useful to report, especially when the stiffness or bite change starts and how long it lasts. Should someone ask the dentist whether to pause wearing it until a fit check, rather than trying to adjust the splint at home?

The timing is useful: note whether the bite feels different only briefly after removing the splint, or stays altered through the day or becomes more noticeable with continued wear. Also record when the stiffness starts and how long it lasts. That pattern gives the prescribing dentist a clearer basis for deciding whether to monitor a temporary effect or check the splint’s fit and tooth contacts.
