but I’d rather have “slippery rubber” than dragon breath during a meeting.

Haha, “slippery rubber” is exactly the vibe after about 10 minutes of chewing. I’ll take that over the “did something die in here?” effect, though. I keep a stash of xylitol gum in my bag for those emergency moments, but I swear, some flavors just vanish instantly and you’re left chewing sadness.

Curious if anyone else has noticed that some gums with zinc actually seem to neutralize bad breath better, or is it just placebo? I tried one of those fancy “breath-freshening” gums once, and it tasted like I licked a penny. Not sure that’s the vibe I want before a client call... but maybe my taste buds are weird.

Has anyone found a brand that actually keeps working for more than 20 minutes? Or is that just a unicorn?

I’ve definitely noticed the “licked a penny” thing with zinc gums—thought it was just me. The only gum I’ve found that sorta lasts is the classic green Trident, but even that’s pushing it past 20 minutes. My trick is to pop in half a piece at a time, then swap it out when it gets gross. Not super fancy, but cheaper than those “miracle” breath tabs, and it doesn’t taste like metal. Honestly, nothing seems to fully replace actually brushing, but for meetings, gum plus a quick rinse with water keeps me from worrying too much.

That metallic aftertaste from zinc gum is so real—I tried one of those “breath defense” gums a couple years back and felt like I’d been chewing on spare change. The green Trident does seem to outlast most of the others, but I always end up with that weird, plasticky wad after a while. I’ve also done the “half piece” trick, especially before appointments or when I had to mask coffee breath in a hurry. Not glamorous, but it works in a pinch.

Honestly, nothing beats brushing (I learned that the hard way after a few too many “close talker” moments), but I’ve found that swishing with water plus a stick of gum gets me through most social stuff without feeling too self-conscious. Tried those fancy breath sprays once—felt like I was eating perfume. At this point, I just keep a travel toothbrush in my bag for emergencies...but yeah, gum is my go-to backup.

You nailed it with that. I’ve tried all sorts of gum over the years—some just make my mouth feel weirder, honestly. That plasticky wad at the end is a real thing. I still keep a pack in my pocket for quick fixes, but nothing really compares to brushing. The travel toothbrush idea is smart. It’s not glamorous, but it’s practical and works when you need it.

I get what you mean about gum not really cutting it sometimes. I’ve tried a bunch too—some of those “extra fresh” ones just leave my mouth feeling dry or weirdly sweet. I still use them in a pinch, but if I’m honest, nothing seems to mask garlic or coffee breath for long. Has anyone actually found a gum that helps with that, or is it just clever marketing? I wonder if those gums with activated charcoal or zinc do anything, or if it’s just hype...
