How I deal with a busted tooth until I can see the dentist

Totally hear you on the anxiety—my kid chipped a tooth last year and waiting for the dentist felt endless. We tried one of those temp kits too, but it just stressed me out more, especially worrying if it would come loose at school. Honestly, sticking to soft foods and salt water rinses made things way easier for us. You’re right, it’s wild how much headspace a little tooth can take up. The infection worry is real, but most of the time it’s just nerves unless there’s actual swelling or fever. Hang in there—it does get sorted eventually, even if it feels like forever.

Not gonna lie, I get why you’d skip the temp kits—they can be a pain. But honestly, I think they’re underrated for giving a little peace of mind, especially with sharp edges or exposed nerves.

I’d push back on that a bit. My daughter had a chipped molar and no swelling or fever, but it turned out she needed antibiotics anyway. Sometimes the signs are sneaky. I’m all for soft foods and rinses, but I’d still keep an eye out for any changes, even subtle stuff. Teeth love to surprise us... and not in a good way.

That’s exactly why I get so nervous waiting for the dentist. You just never know—sometimes it’s nothing, but other times it sneaks up on you. I’ve had a tooth look fine on the outside, no swelling or anything, and still end up needing meds. Temp kits are fiddly, but I’d rather deal with that than a sharp edge or worse. You’re right to keep an eye out for even tiny changes... teeth have a mind of their own, honestly.

Seriously, they really do. I’ve had braces for about a year now and I’m always surprised at how quickly things can shift or feel off. One time, a wire poked out overnight and it felt like my whole mouth was falling apart—ended up being a quick fix, but the anxiety was real. Those temp kits aren’t perfect, but they’re a lifesaver when you just need to get through the weekend without cutting your tongue to shreds.

It’s easy to worry about every little thing, but you’re handling it the right way by staying alert. Dental stuff can be unpredictable, but you’ve got this. Just getting through until that next appointment is half the battle sometimes.

Teeth really do have a mind of their own, don’t they? My kiddo’s only eight and we’ve had more last-minute dental surprises than I ever expected. I remember being up at 2am with her after she chipped a tooth at a sleepover—she was convinced it was going to fall out before morning. We ended up using one of those temporary filling kits to smooth it over until the dentist could see her. Not perfect, but it definitely helped her (and me) get a little sleep.

You’re right, those temp fixes aren’t ideal, but they’re such a relief in the moment. It’s so easy to spiral and worry you’re missing something serious, especially when you can’t get in right away. I always remind myself that kids’ mouths heal fast and dentists have seen it all before. You’re doing exactly what you should—staying alert but not panicking over every weird twinge or shift. Sometimes just making it to that next appointment is a win in itself.
