Braces day jitters: did anyone else feel like a cyborg?

Man, those first days with braces are wild. I remember feeling like I had a mouthful of metal and every bite was some kind of test. For brushing, I found using one of those tiny interdental brushes made things way less stressful—felt like I had a little tool kit for my teeth. Honestly, trial and error was part of it, but once I got the hang of angling the brush just right, it got way less freaky. The wax was a lifesaver too, especially when the wires started poking.

I totally get what you mean about feeling like a cyborg. Was it just me, or did talking feel super weird at first? I kept worrying everyone could hear the metal in my mouth. Did you ever have trouble with food getting stuck everywhere? I tried using those little brushes too, but I still felt nervous about missing spots. The wax helped, but sometimes I wondered if I was using too much... Is that even possible?

I totally worried about that too. My ortho said it’s fine as long as you’re not swallowing tons of it or blocking the brackets completely. I did notice if I packed on too much wax, it would fall off faster or get stuck in food, so now I just use a tiny bit right where it hurts. For the brushes, I found angling them and rinsing after every meal helps a ton, but yeah—still paranoid about missing spots. Talking felt super clunky for me at first, but after a week or two my mouth adjusted.

Haha, I totally get the cyborg vibes—my first week with braces, I felt like my mouth was full of spare parts. Wax was a lifesaver, but yeah, too much and it just gunked up or disappeared mid-meal. It’s wild how your mouth just figures it out after a while though. Those first few days, I was convinced I’d never talk normally again... but now I barely notice the brackets unless something pokes me. You’re definitely not alone in feeling weird at first.

That totally lines up with what my kid went through. The first couple days were rough—lots of mumbling, and she kept saying it felt like her teeth were wearing armor or something. We had a whole routine: wax on the sharp spots, soft foods only, and a water bottle nearby at all times because everything just felt off.

Honestly, the wax thing was hit-or-miss for her too. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it ended up in her sandwich (gross). What made the biggest difference was switching to mostly smoothies and scrambled eggs for that first week. Once her mouth toughened up a bit, she barely mentioned the braces unless something new got tightened.

It’s funny how fast kids adapt. I worried way more than she did after those initial days. Now, unless there’s an adjustment or a wire poking out, she forgets they’re even there. The cyborg feeling fades pretty quick—though I guess we all have our moments where it comes back if something gets stuck!
