I totally get your concern about sushi—sticky rice can be tricky at first. When I first got my dentures, sushi rolls were a bit challenging because of the seaweed wrap. Nigiri (the fish on rice without seaweed) was actually easier for me to handle. Also, sashimi (just the fish slices) is a great alternative—no rice or seaweed to worry about. Tempura and ramen are definitely safe bets, but don't rule out sushi entirely...just maybe start slow and see how he feels? Hope you guys have an awesome trip!

Did you find nigiri easier right away, or did it take some practice? I remember my first trip after getting dentures—thought I'd be brave and ordered a big sushi platter. Big mistake. The seaweed wrap was a nightmare, and I ended up discreetly dissecting rolls with chopsticks under the table...awkward. Nigiri was definitely simpler, but sashimi became my go-to. Less stress, more flavor, honestly. Hope your trip goes smoother than mine did!

Nigiri was definitely easier for me too, but it wasn't instant. Took a couple tries to figure out how to bite without everything sliding around. I totally get your sushi platter struggle...been there, done that, and yeah, awkward is the right word. Sashimi ended up being my comfort zone as well—less fuss and honestly tastes better anyway. You'll get the hang of it soon enough, just takes a bit of patience and practice.

Totally get the sashimi love, but honestly, I found rolls easier than nigiri or sashimi at first. With braces, biting into anything delicate was a gamble...stuff sliding everywhere, rice stuck in brackets—total mess. Rolls were just easier to manage since I could cut them smaller without feeling like I was committing sushi sacrilege. 😂 But yeah, patience is key. After a few awkward dinners out, it does get smoother. Hang in there!

Haha, I feel you on the sushi sacrilege thing...but honestly, rolls were a bit trickier for me at first. With dentures, the rice would sometimes stick awkwardly underneath, and I'd spend half the meal discreetly trying to dislodge it. Sashimi was definitely simpler in that sense—less chance of hidden surprises. But one thing that helped me was actually going for hand rolls (temaki). They're wrapped in seaweed cones, so you can hold them securely and bite carefully without everything falling apart. Plus, the seaweed helps keep the rice from sneaking into unwanted places. Took me a few tries to get comfortable with it, but now it's my go-to when dining out. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is struggling with rolls or sashimi.
