Coping with losing a tooth: distraction or talking it out?

I love the idea of talking it out, but honestly, I needed distraction—or I’d have spiraled into full-on dental doomscrolling. For me, zoning out with video games did more than any pep talk. Maybe my brain just needed a timeout before it could process the whole tooth thing.

Man, I get it. Distraction is like my go-to survival mode for dental stuff. I tried talking it out with friends once after a wisdom tooth extraction... but honestly, it just made me hyperfocus on everything that could go wrong. Next time, I just fired up the PS5 and lost myself in Elden Ring for hours—way better than spiraling about dry sockets.

I think there's something about games (or, honestly, any techy rabbit hole) that just hijacks your brain long enough for the anxiety to chill out. It’s like giving your mind a little buffer time so you don’t have to process the whole “dang, I’m missing a tooth” thing all at once. Sometimes pep talks help, but sometimes you just need to shoot some digital zombies or build a Minecraft castle till your brain resets.

Not saying distraction fixes everything, but for me? It’s way more effective than talking feelings right away. Once I’ve had my “timeout,” then maybe I can deal with the rest.
