Totally get what you mean about the bristles. I switched to medium after my hygienist pointed out some stubborn plaque spots, but I had to retrain myself not to go too hard. Funny thing—my dentist actually recommended alternating water floss and string, since I’d always miss a spot or two with just one method. It’s wild how much of it comes down to finding your own rhythm, not just following what’s “supposed” to be best.

I get what you mean about “finding your own rhythm,” but honestly, I feel safer just sticking to string floss for now. Water flossers kind of freak me out—too splashy and unpredictable for me. Maybe I’ll work up to it, but for now, slow and steady...

Totally relate to the splash factor—first time I tried a water flosser, I basically hosed down my whole bathroom. String floss just feels more controlled for me too. That said, my hygienist mentioned water flossers can be gentler on gums if you’ve got recession or sensitivity, but it’s definitely a learning curve.

I get what you mean about string floss feeling more controlled, but isn’t it kind of rough on sensitive gums? I’ve actually had a few times where I went too hard and my gums bled a bit. Water flossers look messy, yeah, but I’m wondering if the gentler thing is actually true. Also, does anyone else find that string floss sometimes just shreds or gets stuck? That’s honestly the part that bugs me most...

String floss shredding is the worst—especially if you’ve got tight contacts or a filling with a rough edge. I totally get what you mean about it feeling more precise, but I’ve had the same issue with bleeding when I get a bit too enthusiastic. Water flossers do look messy (my mirror’s seen better days), but honestly, they’re way gentler on my gums. The pressure’s adjustable, so you don’t have to blast yourself. Still, nothing beats that squeaky clean feeling from string... even if it means wrestling with it sometimes.
