- Material does make a difference, at least in my experience. My kid’s custom trays from the dentist are way thicker than the mail-order ones I tried (I could practically fold those in half... not great).
- Durability’s huge if you’ve got a grinder. My daughter used to chew through the cheaper ones in a couple months, but her current set’s lasted almost a year with only a few scratches.
- As for grinding, it hasn’t stopped completely, but she doesn’t wake up with jaw pain anymore, so I’d call that a win. The fit seems to matter more than the brand—if the tray hugs the teeth just right, it holds up better and feels less annoying.
- I switched aligner brands once and honestly, didn’t notice any change in the end result. The comfort level was different though—one felt like wearing a mouthful of Tupperware, the other was way smoother.
- Long-term results? I’m not convinced brand alone changes your bite or alignment, but comfort and durability definitely impact whether you actually keep wearing them (which is half the battle).
Fit really is everything. My son’s first trays were mail-order and honestly, he hated wearing them—they’d pop off at night and he’d wake up frustrated. Once we got the thicker dentist-made ones, he actually kept them in. I still worry about long-term bite changes, but at least he’s not miserable every morning. I’m not convinced the brand matters as much as how well they’re made for your mouth... it’s stressful trying to figure out what’s worth the money though.
