Noticed my gums getting crankier as I get older - anyone else?
Yeah, I totally relate to the “moody gum” thing. I used to think it was just me, but apparently gums really do act up as you get older. For me, spicy food is the main culprit now. I used to eat hot salsa or jalapeños with zero issues, but lately my gums get all sore the next day. Not sure if it’s just age or maybe something else going on, but it’s definitely new.
About the electric toothbrush - felt a bit weird at first too, but honestly, my mouth feels cleaner and my dentist said my gums looked less inflamed. I didn’t expect that much of a difference from just switching brushes. It’s kind of annoying how much those little habits matter, but I guess it’s better than more dental bills down the road.
Red wine hasn’t bothered me (yet), but coffee sometimes does if I drink too much. I also noticed that if I skip flossing for even a couple of days, my gums get puffy and bleed more easily than they used to. Feels like my mouth is way more sensitive than it was even five years ago.
Anyone else have gums that react weirdly to stress? I swear if I’m having a rough week, my whole mouth feels off. Maybe it’s just me being hyper-aware, but it’s enough to make me paranoid about missing a step in my routine.
I’ve started rinsing with warm salt water when things flare up. It helps, but I’m always wondering if I’m missing something obvious. Does anyone else feel like their mouth has a mind of its own these days?
Totally get where you’re coming from - my gums have turned into drama queens since I started orthodontic treatment. I used to think it was just the braces irritating things, but even now, if I eat anything remotely spicy or crunchy, my gums get all swollen and sore. It’s honestly made me super paranoid about what I eat and how well I clean my teeth.
I’ve noticed stress makes it worse too. If I’m anxious or not sleeping well, my gums get tender and even bleed a little when I brush. My orthodontist keeps saying it’s “normal” during treatment, but honestly, it feels like nobody warns you just how sensitive your mouth can get.
I switched to a soft-bristled electric brush and that helped a bit, but I’m always worried I’ll miss a spot around the brackets or wires. Skipping flossing isn’t even an option anymore - if I do, my whole mouth feels off for days. Warm salt water rinses are decent, but sometimes it feels like I’m fighting a losing battle.
It’s wild how much your mouth can change just because of age or stress (or braces). Feels like you have to be on high alert all the time... kind of exhausting, honestly.
I feel you on the paranoia - my gums went from chill to total divas once I hit my late 30s and started whitening treatments. It’s like, one day I could eat popcorn without a care, next thing I know, even tortilla chips set them off. For me, stress is a trigger too. If I have a rough week at work, my gums get puffy and brushing feels like walking on eggshells. I switched to those tiny interdental brushes because flossing with regular string got tricky around my crowns. Still, sometimes it feels like no matter how careful I am, they find something to complain about...
Totally get what you mean about gums turning on you out of nowhere. I used to think brushing and flossing was enough, but lately mine have started acting up too - especially after I tried one of those whitening strips. It’s like they got extra sensitive overnight. I’m not sure if it’s just age or if the whitening stuff really does a number on the gums, but popcorn and chips are suddenly a no-go for me too.
I’ve noticed stress seems to make mine worse as well. I had a rough patch at work last month and my gums got so puffy, even my electric toothbrush felt too harsh. Did you ever try switching toothpaste? I went for one of those “gum health” ones, but honestly, I can’t tell if it helps or if it’s just good marketing.
Those tiny interdental brushes are a lifesaver around my crowns, but sometimes they feel like they poke more than they clean. Anyone else get that? I also get this weird soreness along the gumline that comes and goes, even though my dentist swears everything looks “fine.” Does anyone else get that kind of random pain, or is it just me overthinking every twinge?
I haven’t found a perfect routine yet. It’s like the more careful I am, the more my gums find something to complain about. Maybe it’s just part of getting older, but it’s frustrating when you feel like you’re doing everything right and still end up with sensitive gums. Has anyone actually had luck with those mouthwashes that claim to help with gum sensitivity? Or is it just another thing to clutter up the bathroom shelf?
It’s weird how much time I spend thinking about my gums now compared to five years ago. Didn’t see that coming…
I totally relate to the random gum soreness, especially after using whitening stuff. I tried those “gum health” toothpastes too and honestly, couldn’t tell if they did anything or if it was just wishful thinking. My dentist also says everything looks fine, but sometimes my gums feel like they’re plotting against me anyway. I did try one of those mouthwashes for sensitive gums - didn’t notice a huge difference, but at least my breath was minty. I swear, the older I get, the more my gums have opinions about everything I eat.
