Tooth Knocked Out At Playground—What Would You Do?

That tooth-in-the-hand panic hits hard, doesn’t it? I’ve been there—my grandson took a tumble off the monkey bars and, next thing I knew, we were both staring at his front tooth like it was a rare artifact. I froze for a second, then did the classic “wrap it in a napkin” move because, well, that’s what my mom always did. Turns out, not the best choice, but hey, hindsight is 20/20.

I had no idea milk was the gold standard until my dentist mentioned it later. I mean, who’s packing a thermos of milk for the park? Not this guy. Water was all I had, so I just dunked the tooth and hoped for the best. The dentist said it probably helped a bit, but speed was really the big thing.

Honestly, I wish they’d hand out “lost tooth” cards at playgrounds with quick instructions. Until then, we’re all just winging it and hoping for a little luck. At least now I know—no more napkins for me.

Totally relate to the napkin reflex—did the same thing with my kid. It’s wild how nobody tells you what to do until you’re in the hot seat. Quick steps I learned (the hard way): pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, and yeah, milk is ideal but I’ve used water too. Main thing is to get to the dentist ASAP. Wouldn’t hurt if playgrounds had a cheat sheet for this stuff, honestly.

I get why milk is the go-to, but honestly, not everyone has it on hand—especially at a playground. I’ve used water in a pinch too, but I always wonder if that’s actually okay. Dentist bills are no joke, so I wish there were more budget-friendly tips for these emergencies.

Water’s not ideal, but honestly, it’s better than letting the tooth dry out. I’ve heard saline’s safer if you’ve got it, but who carries that around? Has anyone actually managed to reimplant a tooth themselves and had it take? Always wondered if that works in real life.

I agree, water’s definitely not perfect, but I’d panic if there was nothing else. I’ve always heard milk is good too, but who has that handy? I’d be too nervous to try putting it back in myself—seems risky if you don’t get it right. My dentist once said time’s the biggest factor, but honestly, I’d just worry about infection or making things worse. Never met anyone who actually did it on their own and had it work out.
